Today we’d like to introduce you to Karli Klar and Michael Whelan.
Karli and Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We are a jazz, pop and Disney cover duo named Vinyl & Sheen. My name is Karli. I’m the vocalist and I’ve been pursuing a professional music career for nearly five years. My partner in crime Michael Whelan, who happens to be one of the most versatile and accomplished musicians I know, has been doing music for more or less his entire adult life.
He’s a few years younger than me but much wiser in so many ways including music. We met through a mutual friend of ours but didn’t really connect until Michael asked me to sing for one of his projects, A Disney Medley. The rest is history. With Vinyl & Sheen we’ve played dozens of private parties and helped host events and even showed up to a few open mic nights. We both love music and performing so much that we couldn’t imagine doing anything else. It shows in the songs we cover and the connections we make and there’s nothing like what the two us have got when we start our set. It’s magical.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been obstacles in our path. In fact our name itself is a funny story. We were originally called the Wurlitzers, after Michael’s favorite piano in his studio. We played a gig or two before we looked too much into the name. But come to find out, it was already used by a fairly popular jazz band in the east coast somewhere. It was too close too or style for comfort so we knew we had to scratch it. But what could we change it to? We already had business cards. We already had a social media. Luckily, a dear writer friend, Stephen, jumped at the chance to help and provided, (I kid you not) a page’s worth of brilliant names that capture our style. And thus, Vinyl & Sheen was born.
You don’t get to hear alot of the little details like that too often and I think it’s important to mention them. No matter how smooth the performance looks in front of you, you can bet there were hardships. In fact I think some of the really stressful things involving finances and gear and booking that we’ve gotten through have CREATED the smooth performances you can enjoy with us now.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Vinyl & Sheen is an acoustic duo that aims to help with passion projects like, weddings, private parties and events. We are a professional team with talent, skill and a developed musical style. Our covers include jazz standards, Disney songs, musical theater and tops 40s acoustic covers. We can be booked for anything from hosting events to simply playing for a dinner party. We have played for the Runner’s club in SCV and Hipified Records, the student record label at College of the Canyons. Having Vinyl & Sheen at an event creates a classic upbeat vibe that draws an audience in and leaves them in wonder.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a tough city to start in. I should know, here I am pursuing it! But it’s just full of humans, and where there are humans there are good folks willing to help. Music is a people’s business and I believe that where there are people there is an opportunity for a show! If you are determined and passionate enough there is someone out there that can help make dreams a reality. So much more is possible than what you know you can do alone.
My hope is that this city will embrace its musical population and encourage the art of music in business and education and professionalism. There is no straight line path to a music career. That’s something you have to carve out for yourself, but I hope there will be more good support on your path than people and businesses that drag you down. One piece of advice I constantly have to remind myself of is this: never lose your wonder and your drive! Making money with your skill is ALWAYS possible, especially with music.
