Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Roberson.
Karen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I’m a Compton California native who always had a passion for giving back, empowering and helping the communities around me. So I created Mahogany Girl Productions which is a community-based entertainment company providing a platform for local artist, actors, producers, filmmakers and musicians to showcase their talents as well as providing employment for them as well. MGP bridges art, education and entertainment together to help change the world one project at a time and I am extremely thankful to be using this vehicle to help others.
I am also the founder of Mahogany Stars Inc non-profit organization providing mentorship programs and scholarships to underserved youth and young adults in the inner city communities of Los Angeles County.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have definitely had my share of bumpy roads. It can be very difficult at times managing a lot of individuals because you are dealing with different personalities and every person need is different so being the head you have to learn to treat everyone accordingly, gain trust and know that any decision you make is for the greater good for not only the team member but the company as a whole.
Teamwork makes the dream work and I work with a group of fantastic people. Also when you feel like giving up because things will get tough at times remember why you started and whatever you do KEEP GOING! You got this!
Please tell us about Mahogany Girl Productions.
Mahogany Girl Productions specializes in all things entertainment! We produce films, events, and our most notable original stage play The Penis Monologues “The Long Hard Truth” written and directed by Karen Roberson. This stage production is lead by 10 phenomenal male actors who tell real raw and riveting stories that shed light on issues that not only affect black men but men of all races. We had 7 sold out shows with a total of 8 successful shows in Los Angeles and we will be taking the show on a national tour!
What makes me proud and set us apart from others is that we are very intentional with the content we put out. Whether you come to a show or an event we want you to leave uplifted and empowered!
We want you to leave wanting to do better, become better and we want to inspire you to become the best person you can be and give back and help some else who’s in need and by the feedback and testimonials, we are definitely on fulfilling our mission. “Changing the world one project at a time”
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was a kid my parents would send me to performing arts camp and that was the best that could have happened to me! It was there I fell in love with theater. My first mentors were Delayna and Jim Goins of Laity Theater Performing Arts Camps and they were simply the best! Our culminating event would be a huge showcase displaying everything we learned from camp and they would rent theaters in Hollywood and we put on a fantastic show for all of our loved ones to see.
As a teen, I then went on to compete nationally and traveled all over competing in theater and vocal winning first place in some of my competitions representing the great city Compton. I’m so blessed to have these opportunities that truly shaped me into the woman I am today. Good times.
