Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Ponce.
Karen, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Many years ago I started making flower crowns for my friends and my niece. I would make them for their birthdays or baby showers. For some reason flowers always called my attention, they made me feel happy. In September 2016 I had my first panic attack, which leads me to develop anxiety disorder. It was very hard to control my anxiety at times. There were days in which I did not want to get out of bed or I just felt like crying. In the middle of this struggle, I remember the crowns I used to make for friends and how they made me feel.
In 2017 I started an Instagram page, I continued making crowns for friends and family and little by little, by word of mouth people from all over the neighboring areas of Los Angeles started contacting me to have flower crowns made for them. I have made crowns for baby showers, birthday, bridal showers, quinceaneras, weddings, photoshoots, etc. I have hosted crown bars, or flower crown workshops, and have even done event planning and weddings.
I still work a full time job, and during the free time I have in the evening or during the weekend, I put my ideas together. I follow up with clients and answer emails or DM’s.
The majority of my weekends, I am making flower crowns and driving to clients’ homes, or event venues. I like to be personal, learn about each client and their event, I strive to make every flower crown extra special, different from the rest.
Has it been a smooth road?
Juggling a full time job and trying to pursue my dream has been very difficult, There are times that I get out of work tired, or during the weekends I want to rest or hang out with my friends. However, I have set my priorities to work as hard as I can to continue growing my business.
Tell us more about the business.
At Flor Bohemia, I started with making flower crowns, however, I have now incorporated event flower design, event planning, and recently event coordinator. Most people have learned about my business from flower crowns. I am most proud to take care of each customer, I am mindful of pricing and also making all my clients happy is my priority. I try to be prompt when answering emails or questions they may have. I like to make myself available and take some stress away from them.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Flowers never go out of style, trends like tiny flowers on brides hair, and bridesmaids will be increasing more. Additionally, flower walls and greenery walls are starting to be requested more and more, along with the Incorporation of candles, string lights. Smaller bouquets for brides are starting to be more popular as well.
