Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Estremo.
Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Started in 2009, 11 months after the accident that claimed the life of my daughter Arielle Rose. She is the Rose in The Dragon and The Rose. Our intention was to create a living memorial to her and be of service to the Pagan Community in Orange County.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I didn’t have a clue what I was doing! It was just an idea and had I really understood what I was getting into, I might have reconsidered. I didn’t know much about being a Pagan, and I had never owned a retail business before. But fortunately, the right things presented themselves at the right time and we slowly grew into the best shop of our variety. We were moderately successful (and by that, I mean we got the rent, utilities, and vendors paid) all without any real intention. It occurred to me one day that with a little actual intention, we might become very successful. We began looking for a better location, becoming more visible on social media, adding to our team, expanding our product line and services offered. We also became more than a store. We became a community. Offering classes, public rituals, and various other events helped us really connect with the people we serve.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Dragon and The Rose story. Tell us more about the business.
We carry pretty much everything for the practice of alternative spiritual paths (Wiccan, Buddhist, Hindu, Norse, Voodoo, Shamanic, New Age, and eclectic Pagan) We try to support local artists and craftspeople and carry a lot of unique, handmade, one-of-a-kind items rather than mass-produced stuff you can find in myriad other shops of this type. We have arguably the largest collection of stones and crystals in OC, as well as over 300 oils, 200 herbs, candles, books, divination tools, altar supplies, ritual wear, tapestries, wind chimes, jewelry, leather journals, clothing, boxes, smudging supplies, and statuary. We also offer yoga classes, classes in Wicca, tarot and Oracle readings, Reiki healings and classes, monthly drum circles, meditation classes, poetry reading, story-telling, and musical concerts, plus open rituals for every New Moon, Full Moon, and turn of the Wheel (8 Sabbath marking the changes of the seasons). We have built a strong community and we are delighted to see so many diverse paths converge at this place, sharing ideas and experiences, without fear or judgement.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, losing my daughter to a drunk driver 12 days past her 20th birthday was incredibly bad. But it opened a door, and seeking to make the most positive thing I could from this tragedy has brought a lot of truly wonderful things through my door, including a number of young people who have benefited from have a mother figure in their lives. I lost one and gained a hundred. People and things have presented themselves along the way at appropriate times during the last 8 years and have contributed greatly to our success. And our customers and circle members are some of the most awesome people. I can’t believe how fortunate we have been sometimes.
