Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Capalaran.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Karen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2013, I tore my ACL rocking climbing. My injury set me back quite a bit because I couldn’t walk or go to work. During my time off, I decided to learn photography. As a teenager, I always had a camera in my backpack and took photos of a lot of random stuff then made a scrapbook. I figured why not get back into something that I found joy in. I learned about photography via Youtube and also took some classes at a local adult school. I found a wedding company called Lin and Jirsa online and their images were just amazing and I thought to myself, “I’ll one day take beautiful photos like this.” For some reason, I looked at their job listings and saw they had a posting for a photographer assistant. I shot my shot and applied for it and got the position. I was really eager to learn so I jumped on as many gigs as possible and with each photographer I worked with they taught me something different.
Once I was confident enough with the camera, I did my first personal photoshoot with a shoe brand for a friend that was working for a media outlet called Ballerstatus. From there, I was able to travel around the country to photograph and write about my experiences with different brands such as NASCAR, Jack Daniels, MVMT Watches, Toyota and the list goes on. This created more doors of opportunity to work with many different media outlets and brands to create content for their websites or campaigns.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Life is a beautiful struggle and it’s how I learn from every mistake, every failure and every roadblock that makes me stronger in the end. I faced self-doubt about not being a good enough photographer. I’ve turned down opportunities because I was scared of what others would think about my work. However, I only became more comfortable once I stopped worrying about others’ opinions and instead started creating things I loved. I learned that not everyone is going to like what I create and I have to accept that.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kdc Creations – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a freelance photographer who enjoys capturing in the moment action. I have photographed events, concerts, travel, products, automotive, weddings, and more. I don’t have a specific category that I specialize in but I do enjoy photojournalism. There’s just something about capturing moments that really tell a story with just an image.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The city is a creatives playground and I like finding hidden spots to do photoshoots. I dislike traffic.
