Meet Kalyn Mitchell of FlynessNoStylist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalyn Mitchell.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been a creative since high school in my hometown Detroit Michigan. I started my own business in 2012 distressing denim. Customers would drop off whatever jean piece they wanted me to distress and pick them up once the piece was complete. Right after high school, I participated in 2 fashion shows in Detroit. One in 2014 and the second in 2015. I showcased my custom distress designs in both shows blended with a few cut a sew pieces as well. In 2016, I decided I wanted to take my brand to a new level so I decided to move to LA. I knew it wouldn’t be easy but I told myself that I would accept the good and bad that came along with the decision I had made. Moving to LA, I just wanted to be known as a designer! I didn’t want to do anything else. Although things became a little challenging with my designing career. I felt stagnant. I then had to tell myself. How am I going to keep my creative flow? So I started modeling. I’ve never pictured myself in front of the camera because I was so use to being behind it. I’m happy I got into modeling. My brother and I were printed inside of an international magazine called Oyster Magazine and I made vogue.com.

At that moment, I realize that I don’t have to be just one thing. I’m an artist, I can be a jack of all trades! Between time, I never did lose sight of why I moved to LA which was to design. In 2019, an artist named MelianJ and I completed and designed a full denim collection! It was the biggest production she and I had ever curated. We had three castings dates, two shoot dates, three photographers, three makeup artist and we styled 18 models. The time we put into this collection was worth every second! The outcome was phenomenal and I’m very proud of it. You can purchase the collection at www.melianj.com. I’m also so very proud of myself. I moved from Detroit to LA and accomplished everything I said I was going to do. I can definitely say that I’m not who I use to be, I’m better, wiser, and more confident. I’m secure with who I want to be and I know that it’s only up from here!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Life will always have its ups and downs, you can’t get pass that. There were multiple obstacles that I had to face. I’m a man of God and I knew that with him on my side, I could move through any hard situation I faced and I did! Once you’re on the other side of that brick wall that tried to stop you, you realize that it wasn’t that bad. There’s no need to stress about anything. Just remind yourself that you will make it through whatever it is that you think will hold you back. Nothing can you hold you back!

What else should our readers know?
My brand is FlynessNoStylist. That name has been with me since 2010 and trademarked. I specialize in clothes. Whether it’s designing or styling. I’m also known for modeling. I like to consider myself a walking brand!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
If you’re just starting a business, my advice will be to just be patient. You don’t have to rush the process. Big cities like LA is a good place for business because the resources are available and you can connect with like-minded people to create with. Although there’s a price that comes with living in a big city, the expenses. As artist, we don’t like to work 9-5 jobs. So if you can get your business up on its feet and running first that would be ideal before moving to a big city so that you don’t have work a 9-5 to pay rent and you could invest your time in your business 100%. I through myself out there without a plan. I just trusted that what I was doing was right.
