Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalliah.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kalliah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to pursue music. Anything worldly like music with drums, movies, tv to name a few, were not permitted. I didn’t know that I had been born into a closed religious community, indoctrinated into believing that the outside world was a one way ticket to hell. I never dreamt that I would one day be free. Free to drive myself and my rescue pitbull to Los Angeles with that fire in my belly. My name is Kalliah [Kuh-lee-ya] and I am a songwriter, recording artist, instrumentalist [piano, fiddle/violin, guitar], and visual artist.
Unlike a lot of artists who grew up on Mariah or Britney, I grew up listening to Bach and Mozart. Classical music gave me a love of melody. Singing in choir was always an integral part of our schooling, however when I started learning piano, something changed in me. From behind those walls, I realized that music was what I wanted to do with my life.
Although I have not shared my entire story publicly yet, music has allowed me to use outspoken lyrics and anthemic style melodies to start speaking my story and inspiring others to be themselves as well.
Has it been a smooth road?
I really love being challenged. I love how this career has taught me to run straight at my fears. The biggest challenge for me has been to dig deep to find who I truly am as a person without going back to the default personality of my upbringing. In my past, we were never allowed to speak our minds or be ourselves. Naturally, I am a fierce fiery individual and learning how to embrace that in my music has been amazing but also the biggest challenge.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a songwriter, recording artist, instrumentalist, and visual artist. I am classically trained on piano and violin. I have a 4 1/2 octave vocal range and love to explore different textures with my voice. I was a harmony singer first and loved coming up with intricate harmonies. I am obsessed with visuals that surround songs. I always see music videos as I song write. I think what sets me apart vocally is that I can do many different styles from flow rap to rangy hooks. I also am a musician first so I think my ability to break down chord structures of songs allows me to bring more to a songwriting session than just vocals. As you can tell, I am a little bit of a music nerd. I also believe that I was called to do music in order to reach people. I am intensely empathetic and always love to bring that to a songwriting room or when talking to music lovers who follow me on socials.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I feel like Los Angeles is my soul city. I love the vibrance and energy buzz that is in the air. “Only in LA” is one of my favorite ways to see the humor in the many different characters that walk my city. I absolutely love how someone can strut down the street with lime green capris and a feathered hat and totally own who they are. The only thing that is challenging is to record vocals while dodging the sounds of sirens and police helicopters. But even this is just the spirit of my city.
