Meet Justin Knight of Loneliest Knights in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Knight.

Justin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve been passionate about creating. Whether that be me creating art or me starting some sort of business venture of my own. My first love as an artistic medium was dancing. I ended up becoming obsessed with the music aspect of dancing. I loved learning about the history of the genres I liked, the origins, and most importantly, the artists. I started studying artists and watching their interviews. This is where my love for fashion truly started because I would be so intrigued by the designer garments they were wearing.

When I graduated high school in northern California, I moved to LA to pursue my career in the arts. Initially, it was supposed to be dancing, but then I got asked to shoot for a brand with Aaron Requeña because I had nice style. After that initial shoot, I started realizing how much I loved styling and modeling.

Over time I ended up finding myself starting to design clothes, getting asked to style artists, and model as well.

Thus creating my brand Loneliest Knights and Justin Knight as a stylist/model.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Truthfully, I don’t believe that there is such thing as a smooth road. There has definitely been a fair share of struggles that I have had to endure. Whether that be me sleeping on couches or facing periods of time where I’m dead broke, it’s always worth it. I would rather struggle pursuing something I love, rather than doing something that I’m “supposed to do”.

Being an artist, let alone a person in this day and age is tough. Putting your passion out for everyone to see is super scary, especially since you dedicate your life to these things. I caught myself for the longest time, not releasing anything because I was afraid that people wouldn’t appreciate it or that it wasn’t good enough.

Luckily I have a solid group of friends who I can consider my second family away from home. They always support and push me to venture outside of my comfort zone. My friends are like Advil to all the growing pains I have to deal with in my day to day struggles as an artist and a person.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Loneliest Knights – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My clothing brand is Loneliest Knights. I am the founder and creative director of the brand. I specialize in cut & sew clothes. I make clothes that make people feel something and mean something to me. I am deeply inspired by the things around me, the people around me, my past experiences and most importantly, emotions.

I did my first collection on my own in 2018, right after the collection I designed for Part-One.

It consisted of my first tee, “THE PEOPLE VS. THE PRESIDENT TEE”. Which is a cream, slightly cropped, drop shoulder t-shirt. I made this tee around the time Donald Trump initially put under investigation. The font on the tee reads, “WAR ENDS The President Has Capitulated”. This is me looking into a future in which The President has been impeached. The back of the tee says “FREE LOVE”. Still looking into a future where love is no longer imprisoned and is finally free again. All of the fonts I used is actually cut-outs from newspaper articles of past presidents who were impeached and articles of hate crimes in the past. I did this as a constant reminder that history repeats itself and we should be aware enough to break the cycle.

I am proud of my company because everything I make means something to me whether that be functionality, quality of fabric, the fit of the garment, me pushing an agenda of some sort, or me just wanting to make something because I feel like I need to.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have some really cool things planned for the future!

I’m incredibly excited to be dropping my second collection in June and a collaboration with one of my favorite brands that I’ve looked up to for a while now.

I’ve been in class learning from Nathan Achorn, so I can do cut & sew pieces by myself. I’m looking forward to being able to do this on my own.

That’s all I’d like to reveal about my future plans at the moment.
