Meet Justin Keanu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Keanu.

Justin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Everything really started off for me was when I started college back in 2016. I went to film school back where I’m from in Chicago and went for a year. Traditional film school and its professors didn’t agree with my views of the future of entertainment, I believe the internet is the future such as YouTube. After my first year, I decided not to continue, a professor once told me “80% of your life is going to be regular boring work, it’s just reality.” As a filmmaker, I think the greatest story any person can ever tell should be their own life. Time isn’t promised, dreams, shouldn’t just stay dreams, they should be ideas, goals brought to reality. Not all college was bad to me, I had some great memories, but for my dreams to be told is not realistic, that “I need to think about money” actually made me think it over. I chose $2,000 per class wasn’t the best route for me, so I left. I figured I save my money, invest in my own equipment and start my career now rather than later.

I left college Spring of 2017, I hit an all-time low as I felt cornered. I was supposed to be the first one in my family to graduate college, I get my family was worrying about me now but before I just felt lost and afraid, I was letting everyone get to my head about making a “mistake” leaving college. A year passed, I was working delivering food and I realized how much time I wasted not doing anything to move life forward. Growing up my relationship with my parents was rocky, they both work a lot and sometimes the only time my mom and I would be at home at the same time is when we were all asleep because she works all day. My mom had me at a young age and my biological father was out of the picture before I was even born. When I was two my father that raided me, the man I can call my dad came into the picture and raised me as his own. Both my parents have been working hard their entire lives to take care of my sisters. They got us out of Compton and moved us to the suburbs of Chicago to make sure we had a better future. They sacrificed a lot for us.

I know my parents and I know their favorite thing is to travel, they want to travel the world but with their jobs they really can’t that often. They have also both started to face health issues. That’s why I want to work hard so they don’t have to. My goal is to retire my parents so they can do what they love before they are physically aren’t able to anymore. With my work, with my camera I want to show the world the bigger picture, how beautiful the world is, how beautiful life can be, how this is our stories to tell. We have to do what we love because all we have at the end are these moments we share. That’s why I moved to Los Angeles a year ago with $400 in my bank account. I jumped into the deep end forced myself to find a way to make money with my camera. So far I bought my own car, bought all my gear and now I make a video a week on YouTube, and working on eventually becoming daily. I also ended up starting my own company called KNVS with Allen Washington from The Future Kingz as seen on Americas Got Talent. KNVS is a talent team helping artist do what they love for a living.

As a filmmaker/YouTube creator, I want to do what YouTube did for me. Make people feel like they have someone there for them, give them content to inspire them to do what they love, live happier lives and give those around me in my life moments they can hold on to forever in my photos and videos. I always have my camera on me and I’m always looking for the next adventure.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I faced backlash after I left college, from family and friends.

Student loans have made things very hard to stay in LA.

Support from family and friends when it comes to YouTube and Instagram.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a Cinematographer, Photographer and I specialize in my visual storytelling.

Right now I’m focused on saving up more and going to be traveling every weekend to a new destination allowing my instagram followers choose where I travel to and what I do through Instagram polls starting the first weekend of November as a new series on my youtube channel! Focused on getting to 1,000 subscribers on youtube as soon as possible!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I want to retire my mom and dad early, allowing them to travel the world. I want to be able to allow my little sisters to do whatever they want, such as go to any college they want.

I also want to invest into doing more for the environment, such as restoring ecosystems, cleaning the oceans and helping people in need.

I also want to travel on a regular basis, making my videos and taking photos with people around the world.

I want to inspire anyone who watches to do what they love and do good for the world around them.
