Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Jones.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was going to school for web design, but my friend let me use their DSLR camera and I fell in love with it. One day, on my way home from school, I had a inclining to just buy a camera and I was comforted. I changed my major to filmmaking and it turned out I was destined to be a director of photography. I started working with a few friends from school who had connections in the music video world, so I started shooting for some big names, like Hopsin, while in school. I can be described by my team as a great leader and great visionary.
Please tell us about your art.
When I first started filmmaking, there wasn’t anyone to help me. I want people to learn from my work and be inspired. I want to be the teacher they never had.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
For artists, cameras and equipment are becoming cheaper, so more people are able to get into this industry. Therefore, rates are low and they basically shoot for almost free which causes conditions for artists that are skilled and trained to become rough. Budgets are dropping for professionals in that aspect. In terms of me, cities can make it easier to get locations and permits. They could add funding into films like Canada does. They could pump money into the industry to help smaller production companies and films make that a possibility.
