Meet Justin “J.D” Bauer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin “J.D” Bauer.

Justin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a relic from the 1830’s. I look like it and live like it. I was born in South Africa and raised in Beverly Hills. I truly found myself in the wilderness though… I used to be a UCLA trained history teacher. I specialized in Ethnobotany and the West including the Civil War. Ethnobotany is how Native Americans used their local plant life. I am also a desert survivalist and tracker and Boy Scout leader. (I’m VERY outdoorsy). My son ended up having eczema. I changed his diet and it half went away. I had an “aha!” moment where I thought his soap was giving him the issues. I made a bar of 1830 style soap. The eczema went away in 3 days. Then I gave it to my dad who gave it to some friends and the next thing I knew I had an order for 300 bars from Ray Scher, the owner of Guitar Center. I was in the soap business.

I go into the desert. I collect plants. I orioles the plants by hand and make the most amazing and unique organic, vegan, and all-natural soaps, pet soap, deodorant THAT WORKS!! and even shampoo. The business has been growing at a frenzied and exciting pace.

It is very unique. It is VERY American and it is true American culture.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles: treating people that these products REALLY work. There is a lot of “snake oil” out there. Also dealing with growth. I’m having difficulty making the bars to meet demand.

Family too….I’m a stay home dad married to an award-winning criminal prosecutor. It’s humbling and a teaching experience for my children as well.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I make 100% natural, organic, vegan and hand made soaps, deodorants, insect repellant, dog soap, shampoo, etc. They are all made from mainly local fauna that I personally collect or grow. I do every single step of the process including even making the molds and processing the plants.

NO ONE does that.

I’m proud of the successes. The converts to natural products, the five stars reviews I get.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being adopted by two amazing people.

  • Price of my soap? $7.00 a bar. I do every step of the process so I save on labor.

Go Justin!! I didn’t know that you started your soap business because of your son. It seems like so much good comes out of your two kiddos. Much love and very happy for you.
