Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Berrington.
Justin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to L.A. from Albuquerque in 2011 after finishing my AAS for computer animation. My plan was to work in movies and television. But out of nowhere a friend offered to get me a job working for the tech company he was at. Initially I was creating 3D models of clothing for them for an augmented reality app they were developing. After a couple of months, we found that what we were trying to create just wasn’t possible with the current state of technology. So we switched gears to using photos. All of a sudden, I was a photographer with little to no photography skills. For me that was a great place to be because I love learning new skills and challenging myself. So for the next 5 years, I learned as much about photography as I could. In early 2016, I made the decision to start my headshot business on the weekends as a way to supplement my income and test the waters as a business owner.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, it’s certainly not what I initially expected. I was like most people in thinking that if you just learned the ins and outs of how to take a great photo and presented that in a nice portfolio on your website and social media, the people would just show up. You know, build it and they will come. Needless to say, that is just not the case. Although very important, the ability to capture great expressions under flattering light is really the least of your worries as a photographer. You still have to learn how to operate your business to be profitable while getting clients in the door and making sure their experience is amazing. Part of this is learning a lot of different systems that help you keep things moving on the backend. I would say my biggest struggle was finding the time to learn all of it so that I could get up and running quickly while still trying to maintain a full-time job and spend time with my family.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Justin Berrington Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in headshot photography. This is a fairly broad term these days. For the most part, it was the actor/actress and business professional that needed headshots to promote their brand. With social media and online dating being one of the first ways in which people get to know each other, it’s important to have images that give you the results you’re after. Whether that be an image that gets you more dates or one that shows prospective clients a high level of confidence. I’m known for high quality images that do just that. I can build your confidence with dynamic posing and lighting that produce an end result that will elevate your personal and professional brand. That’s what I believe sets Justin Berrington Photography apart from others in the industry.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I was once told by a friend’s father that “a good deal isn’t good unless it’s good for everyone”. That has always stuck with me and I try to incorporate that into my life as well as my business. I want to make sure I can provide my clients with value. There are too many businesses these days that set out to provide themselves with value rather than providing it to their customer. While that probably worked for a while to keep businesses going, I believe that consumers these days are far too intelligent and very aware of shady business practices. Operating like that just doesn’t sit well with me. I want my clients to know that I have their best interests in mind and I think they get that after having worked with me.
