Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Bohmer and Julie Demidova.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We are two New York City girls who happened to meet by chance, working as two female barbers in a West Hollywood barbershop. Although our NYC roots naturally bonded us immediately, we also share the passion of our craft. To us, barbering is an art and we immediately began to admire each other’s unique twists on cuts. As two women in a male-dominated industry, we recognized our combined talents and shared techniques with each other. We became fast friends and thought it was a natural progression to become business partners. Together, our goal is to break gender stereotypes and inspire other women to become barbers because women are just as good. We take the time to provide classic, old-school barbering techniques to create a look that is unique and all that man’s own.
Has it been a smooth road?
Any barber, male or female, faces struggles to build a client base and establish a business. However, there are a lot more obstacles with us being female in the industry. Some guys, especially the older generation, are hesitant to sit in our chairs because we are women and think we do not belong in a barbershop. It comes with the territory. We were often not taken seriously and had to prove ourselves more than the opposite sex, but now we just use it as a motivator to become better than we were yesterday and we choose to let our work do the talking. It is funny to us because male hairdressers are not only accepted in the beauty industry but are sought out. It is not even a question that a man can cut either gender’s hair; the same should be true for women. It isn’t yet, but we are making it our mission for women barbers to be commonly accepted. We want to make sure that when someone says “barber” or “barber shop” it no longer implies that it is a man cutting your hair. We want to make it just a gender-neutral as “hair stylist.”
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the J’us barbershop story. Tell us more about the business.
J’Us is a high-end gentleman’s barbershop – we are in the business of catering to men. We truly take pride in our business and our reputation means everything to us. Our clients are literal walking advertisements, so we get a lot of referrals by word of mouth just based off of the looks we uniquely create for each individual client. Younger men seem to gravitate toward us. We are known for our fresh, creative cuts, fades and straight razors shave. We are truly hands-on and we personally strive for quality over quantity. No cookie-cutter cuts here. We rely on social media networks and actual workshops to learn new techniques and stay current on trends and keep up with what is happening in the barbering game.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Cutting men’s hair is a skill that, due to our passion and drive, we have both learned and mastered. As elite barbers, we focus a lot of time and energy to continually cultivate our talent. Of course, we are interested and driven for our own success. We encourage and support each other to take on more leadership and teaching roles in barbering, and the first step for us toward achieving this level of success was by becoming entrepreneurs. We opened our shop and are our goal is to start our own educational programs and product lines so our full talents can be recognized and made available to future barbers.
