Today we’d like to introduce you to Juree Martinez.
Juree, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m an LA based Hairstylist living in Long Beach. Hair and makeup has been something I was always into for as long as I could remember. Every morning I would watch my mom put her makeup on before she went to work, and I was able to teach myself how to braid hair with my Barbie dolls (one of my proudest moments growing up) and I will never forget getting in trouble for coloring their hair with markers. HAHA! So, I guess you can say that the passion for hair and makeup was always in me.
In 2004-2005, I was able to attend beauty school during my senior year of high school thru an occupational program, and at the time never really thought of it as an actual career. I was styling hair for dances, prom, graduations and birthdays for friends and family all throughout high school and college. I finally decided to make it a permanent career in 2013 when I received my cosmetology license. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to meet the right people to get me where I am today.
You can find me working at Neihule Salon located in DTLA and also at Atlantic Studio in Long Beach. However, work at the salon did recently come to a brief halt when I gave birth to my daughter in November 2016. I’ve been out of the salon since then and currently easing my way back to the salon but still freelancing doing hair and makeup for weddings and special events.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely come across bumps on the road, because you of course have to start at the bottom to get to the top. I’ve had people tell me I wasn’t good enough or doing hair and makeup isn’t a “real job”. It was very discouraging but I also came across people who saw how passionate I was and encouraged me to keep going. I obviously never gave up and you know your dedicated to your craft when you’re doing hair and makeup 3 days before you give birth and having contractions while applying lipstick on your client!
I was also diagnosed with thyroid cancer while I was 30 weeks pregnant. Luckily it was caught in its early stages so I was still able to work and get thru my pregnancy full term without having to do any treatments or even had any symptoms of cancer! I was fortunate to give birth to a very healthy baby girl on November 16, 2016 and recently had a partial thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid) on Feb 24th and have been able to move on feeling normal and more importantly CANCER FREE! With that said, nothing has stopped me from doing what I’ve been passionate about. Doing what I love has actually got me thru the negativity, the pregnancy and cancer. Doing hair and makeup gives me a sense of relaxation and purpose.
Juree Martinez – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hair Styling and makeup for weddings and special events is what I specialize in. I also style hair for editorial photoshoots and campaigns.
What sets me apart is being able to travel throughout LA and Orange County for work. I feel that I can easily connect with clients and be able to make them feel special and beautiful at the end of the day. I like to take pride in my work so I’m always determined to keep myself educated and up-to-date with current trends and styles.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Proudest moments of my career are the little things really, like being able to see my work get featured on wedding blogs and seeing it get pinned on Pinterest.
