Today we’d like to introduce you to June Chiang.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up as a native Los Angeleno, free time meant exploring and discovering hidden gems in the city. Many of my childhood friends and stomping grounds were in less common areas, such as El Sereno, Huntington Park, Alhambra, and Glendale. That was and still is the great fascination I have for this place. There’s a never-ending discovery process of neighborhoods, people, businesses, and creatives, which all interweave into a huge ever-changing conglomeration, called Los Angeles.
That never-ending fascinating adventure is what keeps me here, today. I also grew up dancing. The intensive ballet training kept me happy physically and creatively. In 2000, I was into my seventh year of practicing optometry, and at a professional crossroads, so I decided to take a Pilates certification course at Long Beach Dance Conditioning. Their rehabilitative approach helped immensely with a dance-related ankle injury in 1995. The LBDC program focused on learning to work smarter not harder with one’s body.
The certification course was an amazing international group of dancers, physical therapists, a chiropractor, and performers of all ages and body types. We learned the scientific and holistic approach to healing the body through movement. We witnessed everyone’s mental and physical transformation. I realized that this was the thing I wanted to do–forever. The rest followed naturally and in a gradual progression.
I was very fortunate and immediately started teaching Pilates as an employee at a large studio, LA Body Kinetics in Culver City. Then five years later, took the next step in having an independent practice, sharing a small space in Culver City. Fast forward 12 years, and now expanding the business, Pilates On Robertson, into a larger space as a Pilates and GYROTONIC studio in the SoRo neighborhood, offering high-quality movement training with wonderful teachers.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been many obstacles and struggles. Most of them typical small business struggles, such as long work hours, petty disagreements, slow responses, and so on. It’s all just a part of the growing and learning process. Starting with learning to step back from the struggle and getting the full picture. Then, finding and understanding the lesson learned. Then, focusing on the opportunity to make the business better and staying positive.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Pilates On Robertson is a boutique studio specializing in Pilates, GYROTONIC, and Yamuna Body Rolling. We offer mainly privates, semi-privates, and a few small group classes to a very diverse clientele of all ages, kids through seniors. Many of our clients are recovering from injuries or managing pain issues. Some, come to us to supplement their fitness program so that they can improve their performance in tennis, basketball, dance, or other sports. Others, find our movement programs helpful in managing physical conditions such as scoliosis, osteoporosis, and arthritis.
Privates and semi-privates provide focus and engagement between the teacher and student. Each session and program is a journey towards better strength and mobility which opens up the possibilities for the students to participate in new activities, such as dance, hiking, travel, and more. People leave their sessions feeling lengthened, more flexible, energized, and rejuvenated.
Our teachers have extensive training and many tools in their toolboxes, so we can accommodate different body types, different learning styles, and different goals. Our teachers work closely with each client to uncover and manage the root cause of pain or injury. We also understand that everyone is different and we take the time to figure out what works best for each student for that particular day.
At Pilates On Robertson, it’s all about the extraordinarily rewarding process of learning movement and experiencing how movement can transform lives.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is an amazing place for Pilates and GYROTONIC studios. Because the roots of these movement training programs are steeped in the artistic community of performers and dancers. This city is full of talented and dedicated artists and performers who experience and appreciate the benefits of Pilates and GYROTONIC and many of them become incredible teachers. Los Angeles is also a place where people love to experiment and develop new techniques and ideas.
This leads to Pilates and GYROTONIC studios which are constantly looking for ways to improve their methods and reach out to new communities. For someone who is just starting, I would highly encourage them to begin at a studio in Los Angeles that focuses on quality. The first sessions are so important in setting up a strong foundation so that the client can progress safely and understand the purpose of each exercise.
A studio that emphasizes continuing education among the teachers is a good sign that they are passionate about the work and want to grow professionally. Finding a studio that treats its clients as individuals and encourages each person to make progress is also a hallmark of a great place.
