Today we’d like to introduce you to Julianna Zarzycki.
Julianna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I come from an acting background and never considered myself “athletic” growing up. A movement teacher I admired in college suggested I try Pilates. She knew I was afraid of the gym and convinced me to try Pilates by telling me I could mostly do it laying down! Pilates was the first movement practice that I kept going back to and later when I was looking for a new career someone suggested I try teaching. I could tell from day one of my first certification that I was hooked.
I started teaching Pilates in NYC in 2010. I certified, worked as an instructor, and eventually joined the teacher training staff at the incredible studio Core Pilates NYC.
I moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and opened Treehouse Pilates LA on Joseph Pilates birthday, December 9th. My vision for Treehouse was to create a safe, fun and empowering place for every kind of body and person to practice Pilates. I have built up a wonderful clientele over the years and I have loved working every day since I opened.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Setting up the technical side of the business like insurance, billing and creating an online presence was a challenge for me, but I am lucky enough to have really talented friends who held my hand through it all, in exchange for Pilates classes of course. A win, win! I learned a lot from them and that made me more confident as a business owner.
I also had the luxury of growing Treehouse very slowly. When I first moved to LA, I worked at three other great Pilates studios in the evenings while I built up my own clientele at Treehouse in the mornings. This meant I didn’t have a huge amount of pressure to fill my Treehouse schedule right away and could rely on word of mouth to bring me great compatible clients. I have worked really hard but I have also been very lucky and supported.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Treehouse Pilates – what should we know?
Treehouse is my home Pilates studio nestled in the heart of Atwater Village. I absolutely love working with my neighbors!
All sessions are personally tailored to each client and based in the Classical Pilates Method. I mostly teach private sessions but I offer one very small class daily (Reformer, Tower or Mat) so that people can try Pilates with a lot of personal attention at a lower price point.
I have experience working with people of all levels and with many different injuries and pre-existing conditions. Additionally, I have a background in pre and post-natal Pilates and have worked with many moms to be right up until their due date. I deeply love teaching the method and I truly believe Pilates offers something for everyone.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I literally would not be the teacher I am without all my amazing mentors and friends at Core Pilates NYC. It is an incredible community that simultaneously supported me and pushed me hard to be my best. They gave me my work ethic, my passion and my desire to always continue leaning and I will be forever grateful for my time there.
Here in LA I have been working with Christina Pierson who owns The Reformation Station. She kicks my butt weekly and keeps me humble and curious. Online, I am inspired almost daily by Anula Maiberg (instagram.com/anulamaiberg) her approach to Pilates is compassionate, logical, open minded and fun and she writes beautifully. I feel grateful every day to work in a women dominated industry and to be mentored by so many generous, hardworking, badass and strong women!
Gratitude. Gratitude. Gratitude.
