Meet Julia Roper of Coed Active in Manhattan Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Roper.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Coed started out of a love to health and fitness and a desire for clothing that made me feel good while working out. I was in a spin class when my overpriced leggings were falling off and uncomfortable during the workout. I had the idea that I could create a pair that were better quality, made in my hometown of Los Angeles, and not as expensive. When I came home and told my boyfriend, now husband and partner in the business the idea, he told me that he had been thinking about the lack of activewear options for men. The idea of Coed was born and from there I went full force into finding partners in design, manufacturing and building a business from the ground up.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have of course been ups and downs throughout the entire process. I never really look at the things that don’t work out as failures or setbacks. I’ve always had a pretty steady view of just moving forward one day at a time and taking the good with the bad and knowing that I ultimately can’t control a lot of what happens. Things happen all the time in the fashion industry! Just the other day, I got a re-order of quite a few leggings and they all had the wrong version of our logo printed on it. This kind of stuff happens all the time, but I try and just roll with it and figure out a solution for whatever comes my way.

Please tell us about Coed Active.
We’re a men’s and women’s activewear brand. We make activewear essentials, all made in downtown LA with fabrics containing SPF. We’re known for our sets– the women’s Starter Set which is a crop top and leggings and the men’s Starter Set which includes shorts and a tee. Everything has clean lines, minimal branding and pairs well with its counterpart. We’ve created everything you need to have in your closet to live your very best active life.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t have done anything differently. It’s all a process and I learn from every up and down that we experience. Every step of the process has introduced me to someone, taught me a necessary lesson or forced me to pivot and get out of my comfort zone to make a change if need be. That’s all important to me.
