Meet Julia Juliusson of Sport Performance PT in Laguna beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Juliusson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Julia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there. 10 years ago I began a cash-based Sports Physical Therapy practice, combined with Sport Specific Athletic Training This, after working in traditional outpatient orthopedic clinics for 20 years. I was frustrated with the lack of one on one personal sports rehabilitation and individualized care, being thwarted by insurance companies lack of reimbursement, making PTs out there treat many more patients an hour than they should see, to get real results.

The health industry thrives on its ability to Not get results making the patient/athlete/client have to attend many more sessions than needed so billing/profitability increases for the clinic.

The incentive, actually, is not to make the patient better, but rather, to keep them coming back….

I see it differently

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? It has not always been smooth… I have had to convince local high school athletes, parents, collegiate, and even a few professionals that the Concierge model for rehabilitation and Sports therapy far outweighs using one’s insurance in the current environment;

This is true because my cost per session is about 50% more than what people spend as a Copay each time they see a PT and receive about 15-20 min of their time before being passed to an Aide. In my business the athlete/patient sees me one on one for 60-90 min. Thus, leading to far greater results much faster and a greater rate of return to sports or activity. This equates to less time lost from school, work or play. Faster results. Less total money out of pocket. It’s really a no brainer when people understand the model

Please tell us about Sport Performance PT. I named my company Sport Performance PT. I specialize in rehabilitation of the athlete and sport performance enhancement. I am a concierge PT. That means that I rehabilitate and train the athlete specifically for their sport.

What sets me apart is the time that I spend with each individual…. I marry the two worlds of physical rehabilitation of any orthopedic injury, to athletic training for the activity or sport of choice. Patients work out of an open-air gym, not a cramped physical therapy clinic. Also, I am an athlete of over 30 years, having competed in High school track, college Heptathlon, and now Triathlons for the last 10 years…

I am most proud of my ability to bring in new business daily just by having one success story after another. Each time an athlete or weekend warrior gets better they tell another. And, inevitably I get a call. ” Hey., so and so says you got them better quickly, how can I do the same??” I have been busier than ever being a cash-based therapist, than as an insurance-based therapist because I get results… People get better.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood? My favorite childhood memory was playing the game “Spud” in the cull de sac I lived on with neighborhood kids and also playing Capture The flag in our local park…. these types of games were not only fun but it was then that I realized how much I love sports and competition even before I was a teenager…

    Julia is just the best! I messed myself up after my first long marathon swim and Julia was able to analyze and treat my problem (with “homework”) and get me back into the water.
