Meet Julia Batterman of Julez in Mid-City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Batterman.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A year and one month ago, I made the decision to move to Los Angeles by myself from New Jersey. I grew up in New Jersey and New York City, went to college in New York, and just needed a change. I am a musician and wanted to pursue the music scene in Los Angeles as well. I’ve been a barista since moving here as well as a musician, an artist, and I currently reside in the Mid-Wilshire area with my boyfriend of six years. I went to college for art, but music has always been my main passion.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but for who has it been, really? Debt is a real issue, relationships, not being where I want to be in life just yet. I love that I moved to Los Angeles, but I struggle with my path as a 24 going on 25 years old.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a blues rock, alternative rock musician under the name of ‘Julez’. I write my own music and have my own band to back me up during shows. I play all around Los Angeles, and before moving here, I played all around New York City. I’m proud of and grateful for the fact that I have been able to play many shows since moving here, more than other’s can say they have. In all honesty, I’m still trying to figure out what sets me apart for other people musically.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how open and wild LA is. We’re so close to many amazing parks likes Joshua Tree and the feeling of adventure is so much stronger here than it was in NYC/NJ. I constantly feel inspired to explore somewhere new. The traffic and parking is a cliche answer for sure, but it’s a part of what I least enjoy about living in Los Angeles. Gas is expensive, and I’ve encountered any judgmental people.
