Meet Judi Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judi Lee.

Judi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been interested in creative and design work but a career in Interior Design was something that occurred completely by chance.
At 18, I dropped out of Fashion Design school simply because I couldn’t afford it. I started working at a luxury high-end shoe store, first as a sales assistant and then later, as a visual merchandiser. An Indonesian family who was shopping at the store noticed and liked my window display installation. They had just bought a US$4M apartment and wanted me to furnish their new home. Without hesitation, I said yes and completed the project in 2 weeks. They must have been impressed because they said, “I own a 5-star luxury boutique hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia. I would love for you to come and work for me.” So, I packed my bags and went!

During those 2 years under contract, I was working with The Dharmawangsa Hotel Group. There I was introduced to the world of interior design and the hospitality industry. It was just incredible. That’s when I fell deeply in love with Interior Design. The next couple of years saw me bouncing around different cities and jobs—London for school, Paris for work. When I moved back home to Singapore, I continued to expand my portfolio by working on freelance residential projects for a local interior design & build company. I’ve had all those wonderful experiences and opportunities that moulded my career over the past decade. Now, I live in Southern California and spent 2020 launching Jubilee Interiors, my full-service interior design firm. And I’m fully committed to flourishing and thriving in the interior
design world!

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I began my interior design journey back in 2012, and let me tell you, it has been a wild ride. Being a self-taught interior designer meant having to pick up industry processes from scratch. From figuring out how to draft plans to understanding industry processes, the learning curve was incredibly steep. But my biggest challenge was building Jubilee Interiors in 2020. In the process of fulfilling my dream of being a business owner, I didn’t realize how much of the fun, creative aspects of design work I was giving up. I was constantly bogged down by dry, unsexy administrative tasks like putting in purchase orders, filing taxes, billings, invoicing… the list never ends. On top of that, I was constantly worried if Jubilee Interiors was making enough money. And if that wasn’t enough, I had to work around the COVID-19 disruptions. For instance, I couldn’t be physically present to oversee installation work for ongoing projects due to the social restrictions in place. So I had to video call my team and supervise them remotely. While I totally understand the importance of keeping safe, I can’t wait for COVID-19 to go away. But when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Being adaptable and keeping a positive attitude has allowed me to stay true to my mission. My goal is to create beautiful, functional homes that people feel safe in. To me, that’s my way of putting peace, love, and comfort into the world.

California in general is an extremely competitive geographical location for any creative industry. But at the same time, WE are in the center of the Earth – the north leading with tech startups, and the south leading with anything in the media. I like looking at the glass half full… If you can build your business and succeed here in this city, you can accomplish anything anywhere else.
