Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Marie Partise.
Joyce Marie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my business when I was 19 years old. I came from an entrepreneurial family and was very excited to start out on my own. I spent 20 years in Beverly Hills upstairs from a hair salon, adding on rooms and hired an employee. I then ventured out and created my own space for skin care only, hiring staff in the same neighborhood. After eight years I decided that I would go back to a salon environment as a sole practitioner and have a lovely space in a Salon/Spa one block west of Rodeo Drive. All together I have been in business for 38 years and have seen a lot of changes in the industry. I have spent years also lecturing to women’s groups, was a guest speaker at FIDM, and also sold skincare on QVC. To be in this industry it is important to love connecting with people and helping them have a better self-image of themselves.
Has it been a smooth road?
As with any business, some years are better than others. Finding estheticians dedicated to making this a career choice over a job was a challenge. I really like the days of “networking” where women’s groups would meet and help each other with their businesses. Now the internet is the main source of communication and the personal interaction is gone. Also with the internet, it is more challenging to be competitive with product sales. There are many “diversified” businesses on the internet trying to undersell skincare professionals. Aside from having a personal interest in my client’s skin health, I’ve had to create incentives to keep purchases in the salon.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company Joyce Marie of Beverly Hills is primarily focused on facials. I was one of the very first with an Esthetician license in the state of CA in 1978. I am also one of the very first distributors of Dermalogica. I have spent years attending additional training to keep up with the latest skin care ingredients and treatments. My facial treatments not only work to improve the skin, but also to create a form of relaxation and stress release. My clients always compliment me on my facial massage, and they’re having more knowledge about their personal skin care routines when they leave. I go above and beyond to make my clients comfortable, answer all their questions and treat them with much care. I also feel that my connecting with clients as people, their lifestyles, and their skin care concerns set me apart from other salons and estheticians. People know when you are authentic! I am so proud to be in a nation that promotes women’s entrepreneurial spirit where I can achieve any dream I want if I am willing to work for it. I am also proud of my success and all the people I have helped along the way.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Although the skin care industry is very saturated now, I do think that Los Angeles has a huge demand for good Estheticians. So with a dedicated attitude and a commitment to ongoing education, I believe an Esthetician can be successful in Los Angeles. It is very important to not only be great at your skill but to be great at social media. I highly suggest collaborating with a social media person who can promote your business while you work with your clients.
