Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Marcellus.
Joyce began her Sweets journey 10 years ago. At a point in her life where she needed a change. She had been doing accounting for a car dealership and had to make a choice to either return to college and finish her Master in Psychology or continue at the dealership or find what made her happy. She had begun watching cake shows on TV and thought why not go check out a pastry school. The pastry shook seemed to be ideal to the change she needed but once they said what it would cost for a certificate over 23k, she thought to herself “um do you even know how to bake a cake?”
So, her path leads to taking a couple of classes at a local craft store and as soon as she did her first fondant cake she knew it was her calling. Her baking business soon after began, she went from 1 to 2 orders to 16 to 20 orders a weekend. The truth for Joyce is that her real passion did not begin until her father died from cancer. She was depressed, burned out, and was no longer happy. She decided to rebrand herself and started competing at cake shows all around the states. She has won 1st to best in Show to the innovator.
In addition has been featured in numerous magazines, including Cake Masters and American Cake Decorating. Has won FoodNetwork Cake Wars and competed on Cake Wars Champ. This is where her passion began and found the love of creating food art.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to finding her inner passion has not been easy but has been so worth it. The struggles she has had to face is losing faith in herself, allowing outside factors to determine how she feels, and enviousness.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Toxic Sweets Shop story. Tell us more about the business.
Toxic Sweets Shop is an artist that specializes only in smash cakes for 1st birthdays, has a shirt line, travels and teaches, competes, has an online mini restaurant of classes, runs Sweets University with Kassy Jimenez, runs social media accounts, and builds websites.
But what Toxic Sweets Shop is known for, is her hyper-realistic food made from different sugar mediums. Her ability to create a texture that feels just like real food and all made from sugar is what sets her apart. She is most proud of her ability to make realistic food, like no other.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is a word Joyce is not familiar with. She has been raped, molested, left on the streets to find her way home, bullied, you name it she has experienced it. But through it all, she has continued to take the risk, to continue to fight for happiness, and is driven. She is successful in everything she sets her mind to.
Her biggest heartache was losing her dad to cancer. He has played a huge part in building her to fight against all odds and to never give up on happiness. Success is built from the ability to have passion, drive, endurance, and happiness.
