Meet Joy Hollingsworth of The Hollingsworth Cannabis & Hemp Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Hollingsworth.

Joy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Seattle, WA. I grew up in the “Central District” where is was a predominately black neighborhood. I had golf clubs at the age of 5 and a true love for basketball as well. I played basketball in high school at Seattle Preparatory School and collegiately at the University of Arizona. After playing professionally in Athens, Greece I came back to Seattle to get my master’s in education from the University of Washington. I spent three seasons at Seattle University as an Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.

In 2012, Obama got re-elected, the passing of gay marriage, and I-502 Legalization of Recreational Marijuana in Washington State. In 2013, My brother Raft called a family meeting to discuss his desire to jump into the “green rush”.

At the time, Washington State was the 2nd state to legalize cannabis recreationally after Colorado. Listening to his presentation, I thought he was completely crazy to be nice about it.

In late 2013, Raft applied for a Tier III Recreational Producer + Processor License in the state of Washington. We were legally licensed to grow cannabis in July of 2014.

We got into the cannabis industry for a number of reasons. My mother who has chronic scoliosis and severe pain uses cannabis to help manage her pain. My 99 years old grandmother uses cannabis to stimulate her appetite. My uncle, who is paralyzed from the neck down after a terrible spinal operation, uses cannabis to help relax his muscle spasms, pain, and anxiety.

Our family had a medical relationship with cannabis before the recreational industry was formed. We had always used the plant to help enhance our quality of life.

Currently, today we have a tier III operation of 30,000 square feet of plant canopy space sitting on 6 acres of property. We make everything from oil extracts, flower, pre-rolls, and infused joints. We also have our Hemp Company as well that makes hemp-based topicals infused with CBD and Hemp seed extracts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you’re building a business, it feels as if you have jumped off a cliff and building a plane on your way down with no instructions. Farming will test your soul, heart, mind, spirit and anything else your being has to offer. The thing that has kept us together is us being a family business. We can lean on each other, we can support one another and cry on each other’s shoulder.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment since we have started our business is that we’re still together as a family and no one has killed anyone yet. It’s tough. But that we’re able to grow something with our hands, on our land and share it with people. We also celebrate our grandmother’s birthday at the farm and for someone who was born in 1920 in the deep south, and she overcame high barriers as a black woman and went on to create a strong foundation for us to continue to build and most importantly give back to the community is where it’s at!
