Meet Jourdan Hilaire of HilaireM.A.D.E in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jourdan Hilaire.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in the inner city of the Southbay, Hawthorne, CA. Raised by my mom, who was a single parent all my life. One thing my mom instilled in my brother and I at a young age is to always treat everyone with respect even if they don’t show you the same. One of those cliche sayings combat darkness with light ya know? Didn’t understand it then but later on in life, I realized the way my mom raised me, helped to elevate the person I was destined to become. Moms preached school and education to me since day 1. Even though I never was book smart or even had a strong focus in continuing my education growing up like her, but she kept me grounded and focused to ensure I had more opportunities when I got older. Eventually I received my bachelors degree at California State University, Fullerton and my Masters degree at University of the Pacific, Stockton CA. During my college years I was very involved in co-curricular activities like sports such as track and rugby, and student organizations like Black Student Union (BSU) and Alliance for the Preservation of African Consciousness (APAC), Black male organization that promotes brotherhood and leadership in and off campus at CSUF. I learned a lot during my time in college such as discipline in academic world meaning when to study, when I can chill and play madden haha, and when I got to switch into over drive and focus up. I also learned how to program and plan small to large scale events, which eventually became an amazing skill and passion of mine. These last 3-5 years I have immerse myself in higher education and student affairs working closely with all types of student groups on a college campus to support and uplift them while they go through similar challenges and accomplishments I once did back in the day. I became interested in entrepreneurship the last two years. I always wondered how I can infuse my passions of developing others, event planning, and working on teams to reach small to large goals. That’s how HilaireM.A.D.E came about. M.A.D.E is an acronym for Motivate, Achieve, Design, and Entertain.

Has it been a smooth road?
Well, definitely not a smooth road haha, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s been the worst thing I’ve ever done. To be honest, I’m legitimately having fun. Being able to create something for myself, to impact others in a positive way, while learning new skills daily is pretty awesome to me. Now, I’m not saying there aren’t any road blocks because there are for sure! I think one of the biggest challenges I’ve been through is gaining credibility. I launched my brand in Louisiana. So, I was kind of in unfamiliar territory. My last year in Louisiana, I started my business of hosting a variety of events like my annual fashion shows, and a recognition event for women called Why I Love Black Women. Although the events were well received, the numbers that myself and my team would like weren’t there. I was not from that area, to some I was an outsider so the trust factor wasn’t there all the way so I really didn’t have the backing and investment like some other businesses and brands in the cities and states. So I had to network more, develop more intentional relationships/partnerships, and ultimately show people that I’m not playing any games, I don’t have any alternative motive, I just want to do what I love, which is to bring people together and program in the city. I definitely got support early from my Baton Rouge community members and I am forever grateful for them. I will continue to stay in contact with them and help them out anyway I can because they helped me do what I have a passion for. But statewide, I had to prove myself and I think in a year or so, a lot more people know my brand and what I’m about. Also, it’s not easy, planning events by yourself. I had to think about considering forming a team I can depend on to help execute my vision, which ultimately becomes a shared vision (if they believe in you), and I was blessed to have a strong team of former students and community members that supported me this last year. It’s not always easy balancing multiple personality types and difference of opinions, however my experience working with so many different types of people since college and currently as a professional in higher education has prepared me for these moments

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the HilaireM.A.D.E story. Tell us more about the business.
Well in its simplest form, my business specializes in developing and managing events, while also advising other’s business on brand awareness and marketing. Our three main values are professionalism, Organization, and Customer/Guest Friendly. We pride our selves on providing a product to all our guest that will motivate them to reach their full potential, focus on goals they’re able to develop intentionally and achieve, design platforms and spaces to reach new heights, and lastly but most important, entertain the public! Our business is multifaceted in that we can help build your brand through our expertise in event planning and unique marketing initiatives, and we will assist, plan and or manage your event from start to finish whether it’s a wedding, gala, birthday party, conferences, etc. In the near future we will also soon feature event supplies and equipment apart of our event planning services to meet the need of all our clients as guest. Lastly, as I mentioned before, we plan our own events to give small to large business an opportunity to partner with us and get connected to the community we’re serving. I’m most proud of the impact my team has done in just 1.5 years of existence. The feedback we get from our satisfaction surveys for each of our events are overwhelmingly positive and our goal is to continue to raise the bar for each event we plan, host, and manage.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
To be honest, if I didn’t have a 3, 5, 10 year strategic plan, then why am I even doing this? Yes, I do it for the fun, but I also do it to create an empire for not just myself, but my future family. God rest my mother’s soul, she instilled excellence and patience in me at a young age and my vision for this brand has just that. A goal of mine is to host events that will attract thousands in attendance, develop sponsorship relationships that will expand states, and continue to support small to large business in their brand development or whatever avenue their hoping to improve on. My team plans to continue to improve our social media presence, program planning efficiency, and multiply client interest as much as possible. We’re in this for the long haul, and we plan to accomplish those goals through patience, commitment, and guest/client positive relationships. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for our future.
