Meet JoumessiYolande Libii of M A M I N Y A N G A in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to JoumessiYolande Libii.

JoumessiYolande, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Why I started designing is very simple. I was broke. I couldn’t afford my taste in style. So being the innovator that I am. I decided to make my own clothes. I was not thinking about becoming a “Fashion Designer” and becoming an Entrepreneur until 2018. I started designing in 2012. I was 20yrs old and when i say designing. I mean cutting up my old clothes and turning them into something new. Those creations can be found on instagram by typing in @brokeandcreative . By the end of 2012, I asked my mother who’s taken sewing classes before. To teach me how to sew. being the fast learning that i am. I made my first top winter of 2013. That was the beginning of me becoming a designer.

My social life helped me become the designer I am today a lot. Going out inspired me to create a look no one at the party/Event will be wearing. I enjoy standing out. I created custom designs for myself for three years. Then in Sept 2016 at the age of 24. I gave birth to my first child. I thought motherhood would ruin my Fashion desires but to my surprise it only enhanced it. Once I was cleared to perform vigorous exercise. I took the steps to get back in shape and I planned my parenthood and my entrepreneur life side by side.

Late Summer of 2017, I created my first four piece summer collection. I named it MAMI NYANGA. After myself. it’s a nickname my mom called me growing up. This phrase is an old saying from my mother’s country Cameroon, West Africa. She used to call me this growing up because I was such a girly girl at a young age. Hints the meaning of M A M I N Y A N G A. Now that I’ve made a mini collection. I was ready to enter Fashion Shows.

In Dec 2018, I featured in a Fashion Show for the first time. Being a contestant in the show I had to do something I’ve never done before & that was to create a 10-12 piece look collection for girls in different shapes and sizes.Thats something ive never done before. This was very intimating. I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off but I’ve been watching Project Runway for years now. So I used the knowledge I’ve gained about Collections and how to create a cohesive look and put it towards this new endeavor. The collection was a total failure in my book but it served as an amazing experience. I dropped the ball on so many different levels but to my surprise the audience loved my creations. Not enough to make a sell but enough to receive numerous compliments. Since then, I’ve done three other fashion shows with other creatives in NYC and I’ve made two collections since then. I am now enrolled in The Fashionpreneur Academy by instructor Jessica Williams, where I am learning about the business of Fashion and how to launch a business correctly.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Following a path in life is never easy. Needless to say my path was super challenging. Deciding to become a fashion designer, forced me to find my voice/ identity. I went through a lot of changes with relationships like with my mom, my friends and even myself. I had to overcome FEAR, SHYNESS, PUBLIC SPEAKING, PROCRASTINATION, DOUBT and flying solo. The path I’ve experienced deeply shaped me into the person and designer that I am today.

M A M I N Y A N G A – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What you should know about M A M I N Y A N G A is that it represents me. My African descent roots and my American born style meshed together in sheer harmony.

M A M I N Y A N G A is a Cameroonian term and it represents the girly girls. Despite her size and style.

M A M I N Y A N G A is a luxurious sheer ensemble brand that can be worn in ranges from The Met Gala to the supermarket. I invited the idea of the “naked dress” and turned it into everyday wear. I am making it accessible to the middle class and making it okay for women to dress extravagant for any occasion because we all know the saying “when you look good, you feel good”. My brand M A M I N Y A N G A is the first of its kind. Expect a full come back by summer 2021.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s not fair to break down my most fondest moment to One but since I have to. I would have to say when I conducted a campaign photoshoot for M A M I N Y A N G A’s spring/summer collection in summer 2019. The models consist of myself, my best friend, a friend I met from a dance class and a model that was referred to me from another friend who modelled but wasn’t able for the shoot. This was the largest step in branding and marketing I have ever made. The photographer I worked with named Cameramack Photography was a family portrait and boxing photographer but he wanted to expand his talents in photography. So we took a chance with each other on this project. The outcome was amazing. The photos can be viewed on the instagram page for M A M I N Y A N G A at __maminyanga__.
