Meet Josia Elliott of Goal Crushers in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josia Elliott.

Josia, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I originally hail from Wyoming, which means I’m not great at talking about myself! The culture is the polar opposite of the flashy, over-busy, tech-addicted, me-centric attitude that defines modern Los Angeles. That being said, I always knew that I wanted to live here. As a kid, I was a big dreamer and loved stories, so I got it in my head early on that I’d head west and make movies. In my mid-twenties, I was awarded a scholarship from Panavision to do film school workshops at Maine Media College. After that experience, I knew my dreams were a calling and I had to make them a reality. So, I broke up with my boyfriend of 7 years, sold all my shit, and moved to LA with 500 bucks and a backpack. I’d reached that point of no return and just never looked back. It’s been a wild ride. I love LA culture, the people here and my job as a TV Producer.

Has it been a smooth road?
Hahaha! Nawww, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Adversity builds character, especially when combined with grit. I feel lucky in that I’ve always had good friends who made the tough times just seem like good times. When you boil it down, I’ve got so much love for LA and the people here. Plus, the opportunities for growth are endless.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Before I started producing TV, I was working at a talent agency. While I loved my co-workers and got tons of great on-the-job experience, the job was pretty soul-sucking. As the grind of work took its toll, my personal goals and motivation began to take a backseat. I chatted with my co-workers and industry friends and learned they were in a similar pickle: They had goals but needed help with motivation and focus.

Being raised in Wyoming is super different than living in LA. In Wyoming there’s a strong focus on community and lending your neighbors a hand. In Los Angeles, it’s a more “every man for himself” type of a vibe. That’s just not who I am, so I decided to go back to my roots, apply that mindset to goal setting, and invite other people in the Entertainment Industry to join in. There is strength in numbers, so I herded people together– online and in-person— with the intention of getting shit done. Together, we’d all lasso our goals and wrangle them into submission by getting clear, specific and measurable in our aims. I rolled out deadlines to help with focus. I assigned accountability buddies members to kick each other in the butt and stay disciplined. I encouraged people to celebrate their progress and wins. Asking for help from each other became a golden standard within the group. It worked! Members in Goal Crushers have done tons of cool things like making feature films, selling scripts/pilots, getting huge job promotions, negotiating for more money at work, and so much more!

Over time, Goal Crushers has reached nearly 700 members… all of whom are hardcore, unstoppable badasses. Something I’m really proud of is that we have a strict “no being an asshole” policy. There’s enough ego and hoopla in the Entertainment business already—ain’t nobody got time for that in our group.

Goal Crushers is about much more than just being bold AF in pursuing what you want. There’s heart to it. I’m proud of the comradery within the group. Haters will say this industry is cut-throat, but Goal Crushers know generosity and accountability are golden and will get you ahead… together.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think LA is the perfect place for Goal Crushers. You’ve got a city full of “doers” with big dreams. The stakes are high here, the pressures of the city are unique, and it’s so easy to get distracted. I think Goal Crushers helps people remember that pretty much anything is possible as long as you 1. Make a Goal 2. Go HAM in achieving it 3. Be Excellent to Each Other in the Process. Also, I just made up those three rules right now, but they totally work. Hahaha. Goal Crushers is my small offering to people and a city that has given me so much. It feels good to know I’m helping people stay on track. We’re all making a difference.
