Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Candelaria.
Josh was born and raised in Edmonton, AB. Watching the movies Honey and You Got Served religiously, he knew he wanted to start dancing. His passion for dance began right when he stepped into his first Hip Hop class at the age of 11. He trained at local studios 3rd Street Beat and Kore Dance Studio where he learned a variety of Urban/Hip Hop styles and even Contemporary. Three years after he started dancing, he joined NXG Company, Founded & Directed by Alexander Chung! They have performed at many competitions, shows and have trained numerous times in Los Angeles.
His love and passion for dance grew, even more, when he joined NXG. The family and environment he was surrounded with were what inspired him to pursue dance as a career. Some of Josh’s favorite dance moments were dancing for Janet Jackson at her “Unbreakable” World Tour in Edmonton, competing at World Hip Hop Championships numerous times, and dancing in shows Produced by NXG Company/Kore Dance Studio. Now he is 1 of the Directors of NXG Company and has recently competed on the TV Show World of Dance Philippines in the Adult Division. The family and environment he was surrounded with was what inspired him to pursue dance as a career.
“I love connecting and getting inspired by other Artists. It’s crazy how this art form can impact the way we feel and view the world!” Josh hopes to inspire others positively as he continues this journey with his career.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would say struggles and obstacles are constantly going to come my way and the true test is just how I handle and use them to grow. A hugs struggle I encountered was when my Dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 Brain and Spine Cancer in 2009 and passed away a few months after. I was devastated and was set on quitting dance. Even afterward, it was hard to stay passionate and love dance vs. just doing it to get my mind off this situation, and any negative situation really. Little did I know, dance has helped me express myself, it wasn’t just an outlet, I was able to touch people, tell a story through dance from my life experiences. With every struggle, there is always a beautiful outcome.
