Meet Joseph Corella of 567Broadway!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Corella.

Joseph, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I discovered dance at age 7 and basically haven’t stopped moving ever since! I’ve had the honor of dancing on Broadway, in national tours, and choreographing for popular TV shows. As a performer, some of my credits include ALL SHOOK UP (Broadway), National tour of GREASE (Dance Captain), 50th Anniversary Tour of WEST SIDE STORY and SURF, THE MUSICAL (Las Vegas). As a choreographer, credits include HBO’s docu-series 15: A Quinceanera Story, Hart of Dixie on the WB and the MTV Video Music Awards. Using my dance, theatre, and fitness background, I love to teach dancers and non-dancers alike to move, exercise, explore their bodies and express themselves through the power of movement.

After 20 years of performing, I made the transition to choreographing and teaching dance fitness. Thus, I created 567Broadway! Which combines everything I love! The main mission of 567Broadway! is to make movement and fitness fun and accessible for everyone! There is always a special moment when a first-time student enters the class and sees the gold top hats we use as workout props. (Yes, gold top hats are part of our workout!) Their eyes light up and seeing that reaction never gets old. I worked really hard to infuse the joy of Broadway with cardio and strength training in order to create a fun and safe space for all fitness levels. Most importantly, this workout is going to make you SWEAT! 567Broadway! is truly an unforgettable workout experience!

This year has been a really big year of growth for 567Broadway. We kicked off the year with a Kickstarter campaign in January to create our very first 567Broadway! workout video. I’m so grateful we met our funding goal, and it was amazing to see the community rally around this idea that our team had been dreaming about for quite a while. Now, almost a year later, we have wrapped production and almost have a completed product. It has been an amazing journey, full of ups and downs, and I am grateful every day for the growing community of people who continually inspire me to passionately pursue this mission. We can’t wait for “567Broadway! A New Musical Workout” to hit shelves all around the world and for everyone to experience this workout!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I set out to start my own dance fitness class, I never expected the road to be smooth or easy. After performing professionally, I know that building anything lasting takes a lot of time and effort. As this class and business continue to grow, every day presents new and different questions and challenges. And sometimes the answer or path forward is clear, but more often than not, I find myself looking the unknown squarely in the eye and just give it my best shot. I’m constantly reminding myself to just put one foot in front of the other. Most importantly, I am incredibly thankful for the dedication of my students, and the behind the scenes work from the 567 Team. 567Broadway! is where it’s at today in part, because of this amazing support system.

567BROADWAY! – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
567Broadway! is an ALL LEVELS WELCOME dance fitness class. The first 30 minutes are dedicated to cardio and strength training, and features hit songs such as “One” (A Chorus Line), “Hand Jive” (Grease), “Bend and Snap” (Legally Blonde), and many more. Trust me; you haven’t lived until you’ve done choreographed squats to “Bend and Snap”! During the second part of the class, students learn a fun dance combination to a song from a hit Broadway musical! This is a safe space for you to have fun, sweat it out and shine bright like the Broadway Star you are! (Make sure to wear running shoes and bring a towel and water.)

I am so proud that 567Broadway! makes fitness accessible to anyone who loves to dance, regardless of ability. I think what’s really unique about this class is the safe and welcoming atmosphere that gets people sweating and working hard while having so much fun. I am most proud of the family we have built as a result of this class. It’s a true community that I’m incredibly fortunate to be a part of.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
One word – trust. I need to trust that I am able to provide the best experience possible for students as well as trusting the process of growth. Change is never easy – even when it’s for the best. But I know we are on the right path when I see sweaty faces with glowing smiles after every class. As well, the messages I receive of how the class has helped students personally is a big reminder that this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing.
