Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Avendano.
Jose, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story starts off as a young man of 18 years going into college, not knowing what career to choose from. As a boy, I was reckless and confused and got into trouble often and as a quick answer, I would often tell everyone I was going to end up in the military.
It wasn’t until I came across theatre that I began to hear a calling and the more I listened the more I became passionate. I graduated with my BFA in Acting from Missouri State University in 2016 and I was on my way to Los Angeles. I stuffed all the belongings I could into my small car and I moved to California alone. I left my parents and two brothers behind with a promise that I will succeed in my career. It’s now 2019 going into the new year and I must say things have changed for the better. Within the first year moving here, I signed with my first agency and became eligible to join the actor’s union called SAG-AFTRA which is difficult to get into especially in one year.
I joined the following and my career skyrocketed. Took off and I had to hold on haha. I’ve never been busier, excited, creative, social, and passionate than where I am today. As a young man back then, I never thought I would become an actor let alone a professional actor living AND working in Los Angeles. To this day, all I want is to make those two people I left back home called mom and dad proud. I’m not that same child they knew and for that child to evolve into this isn’t common in a Hispanic household. I believe my hard work has paid off and will continue to pay off. My name is Jose Avendano and I am a professional actor. And I’m only getting started 🙂
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would be lying if I said it’s been a smooth ride. I was asked many times how I did it. How did I make this career a reality? I didn’t have a straight explanation but it came down to one word “sacrifice”. I had to say goodbye to a lot of things in life just to make this new life. I had to say goodbye to friends, family, sleep, fun, and even going to church. Because of all these things and people put aside, I struggle emotionally and mentally. The motivation was only fueled by my love for this art. It was all I had and I wanted this career to work so bad so I can have time to possible get back what I lost. I was lonely during the first couple of years. My face was stuck between scripts and emails and business books. I failed many times. I even doubted myself and questioned the career path. Sometimes it felt like I had no control. As I said before, hard work pays off. Its philosophy. Any success is controlled failure.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a professional actor. I take pride in the fact that I said that I was going to make this career work and it has come true! I am now living this dream. That is what sets me apart, I’m not a dreamer like most who come out here for an overnight success or for the quick fame. I am established here and I know what it took and what it currently takes to remain as a business.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory has to be when my father tells me about how him and my mother met on the steps of college. Both were young and they were cast in The Wizard of Oz, where I believe is where the spark happened. My mother was Dorothy and my father was the Scarecrow. Of course, when I ask my mother I get a different story on how it “actually” happened haha.
