Meet Jonathan Butler of Renegade NX in South Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Butler.

Jonathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Most people know me as Jay B. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I am a local kid grown in the streets of LA mostly in the hood, went to the local schools horse mann and Crenshaw high school. I was never the Fashion-forward type of guy, Nike sweatsuit was my go to all teens. While in high school I wanted to stand out and be my own person, so I started to make making my own t-shirts and designs. As I started to do more shirts, I actually started to like what I was doing. After high school tho I stopped working on shirt design and went into the audio engineering field. But I felt like something was missing out my life and I knew I need to start working on my crate again. I relaunched my brand in 2008 as “We the Nation” then “The NATION” but both names wasn’t sitting well with me it didn’t in body what I wanted my brand to stand for so. In 2015, I relaunched again but this time I had to the perfect name to fit me, my brand and my customers RENEGADENX (RENEGADE NATION X). So now I’m all hands on deck and pushing forward with my brand.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Noooo, it’s been a life lesson. I have been backstab a few times, I’m doing it all out of pocket. Trying to figure what is the best way to build my brand up and push it to market. Getting the right look and keeping up to date with the current trends balance with my current job and co parenting. But at the day of the day this is was I want and I will struggles to achieve my goal.

Please tell us about RENEGADE NX.
I call my brand RENEGADE NX (RENEGADE NATION X), right now we are a t-shirt clothing line, that is pushing to brand RENEGADE NX with t-shirts, button ups, hoodies, you name it we will brand it. Everything is made to order, everything is custom you let me know how you want your shirt printed, from the design available at the time. We are known from are dad hats and t-shirts that you can spot t some local black businesses. I’m proud that we have the opportunity to share my brand and message with the local community and hopefully the world all in time. The word RENEGADE sets us apart from others we just not a clothing, we are a light for the misunderstood, The people that make their own way. The Outkast. The misfit ones that don’t play by the rules to get the things that need to be done. The ones that won’t take no for an answer. The “I can do it so watch me do it”.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I remember I was walking home from school with a few friends on Crenshaw like we do everyday. I had on my fitted patched new era hat on, white t-shirt, some blue jeans and some Nike. I remember the hat because I really wanted it but it had all the “gangs hoods” on it so my moms was like no not having it. But she came around and got it for me. So I was wearing it walking home and a car pulled up and two guys hop out the car and jump me for my hat nothing else. At that point, I realize it was a dog eat dog world out here. We all are not mint to fit in with everybody.
