Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in a musical family, and community (Agoura Hills / Westlake Village) that supported the arts dramatically. In high school was performing / recording music for fun in the greater LA in various bands with my close friends. My father was a drummer (hobbiest), and my Uncle was an entertainment attorney in Nashville. Some friends of mine in high school had partners that were in the business, so being around successful engineers / producers only helped to inspire me to make music a career choice.
After High school, I moved to Boston to study music production & engineering at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. This just made me a better player, and exposed me to so many new genres of music that I had never taken seriously – especially electronic music. From there, I worked my way up in the industry by internships, side hustles, and eventually landed a job as an audio engineer for Will.I.AM’s record label I.AM.Music.
From there I started a small recording studio, and opened what I thought was only going to be a Vocal Production studio. Having some clients, I saved up enough money to spend 3 months during one summer to make music every day. I think I made over 150 songs — and submitted music to every A&R I knew. Jonathan JR Rotem signed me off a song one of his artist’s he was working with on Sony liked, and from there I started my songwriter career for the next 5 years+.
After working with some of the best and worst in the business, I settled into a good balance of working with emerging talent, major label talent, music for advertisement, and teaching at the Musicians Institute. Currently, I’m also the co-founder of music-tech startup Partner.ly, a technology platform that partner’s artists with high level brand brands for strategic marketing campaigns.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, things were very up and down up until I decided to break away as a signed writer to UMPG. Once I gained some deep understanding of the industry I carved my path more independently based on my own definition of “success”.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Archwood Music – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m known as a music producer that specializes in emerging artist development, and mixing organic music with emerging technology.
I’m most proud of my 2X Grammy nominations, and my most recent trip to Norway where I helped create music to promote tourism. Random, but it was a project where I was given full creative control and the experience recording music in nature was something I had always wanted to do.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Weather, food, diversity, and creative hub are all wonderful aspects of the city that keep me here. The most difficult part for me has to be the traffic (of course), and the potholes!
