Meet Jon Mathisen and Pat Mathisen of Seabold Ginger Beer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Mathisen and Pat Mathisen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jon and Pat. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We’ve both always had an entrepreneurial mindset and an adventurous curiosity for food and beverage. That exploration coupled with our desire to work for ourselves led us to found Seabold Ginger Beer in early 2014. We were always fond of ginger beer and set out to make an organic, healthier version of it because it simply did not exist.

We started out small selling at our neighborhood farmers’ market and a few local coffee shops and cafes. Since then, the business has grown at a steady pace and we’ve continued to expand our footprint in the greater Los Angeles area. Our product is available in fine retailers such as Erewhon Natural Foods Market, Alfred Coffee, Zinc Cafe, and The Butcher’s Daughter.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We embrace every challenge and look at them as opportunities instead of obstacles. It’s why we focus so much on the quality of our product and the local vendors and customers that support us.

We’ve experienced our fair share of struggles but that’s to be expected when starting and funding your own business from scratch. A food or beverage company is a unique challenge as you have to navigate all of the regulations from the city, county, and state in which you operate. We were diligent in making sure we followed all of the legal guidelines because it can be confusing.

In addition to dealing with all of the regulation, we’re putting our product up against much larger competitors who possess greater scale and have more resources than us.

When we first started out, we realized the importance of pacing our growth. At the first sign of success there is a lot of pressure to grow quickly and outsource your production to meet demands. Instead of going along with crowd we have stuck to our process and put all of our proceeds back into our business to grow organically.

This has worked well for us and we’ve been rewarded with a loyal customer following that support us. Los Angeles has been so receptive to our product and the city’s encouragement has been motivating in helping us navigate the many challenges we’ve faced as a small business.

Seabold Ginger Beer – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We make ginger beers and ginger cordials (non-alcoholic). We offer a variety of flavors with our Turmeric Black Pepper Ginger Beer being the most popular.

We source only organic, non-GMO ingredients to produce our beverage and we do our best to support local and sustainable farmers.

We’re proud of producing a high quality, healthy organic beverage that people all across Southern California enjoy.

Our quality separates us from other beverages. We refuse to cut corners just to save a few dollars. Our process may take a little more time and effort; however, we feel that separates us from our competition and allows to make a superior product.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment occurs whenever a customer tells us that they enjoy our product. The feeling of knowing someone gets satisfaction from our beverage and that it brings them happiness never gets old!
