Meet Joleigh Sherwood of Creating Connections in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joleigh Sherwood.

Joleigh, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Native Californian who grew up on the Central Coast. I attended Community college and discovered my passion for learning about children and how we grow and develop as human beings. I transferred to a four years university and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development with a focus in Child Development.

I began working in a child care center and after being there for about two years one of the families I had known since I started, and had grown to love, offered me a position as their nanny. They were about to have their second child and wanted me to come work in their home. After a lot of thought and a few conversations, I said yes!! Their oldest is now starting college and we are still in touch to this day. I have been honored with the title “bonus family!”

Ten years ago this month I moved to Los Angeles. I was in a self-development program with Landmark Worldwide and discovered I wanted to attend grad school and expand my knowledge of the field of Human Development, again focusing on Child Development. I attended Pacific Oaks College while working at a nearby child care center. About a year into my position at the center, almost the same thing that happened before happened again. A family approached me to become their nanny. Long story short…I said yes. Now, I never set out to be a Nanny. That was not my intention. However, both of these families have become family. Two experiences that have been filled with love, gratitude and teamwork! To this day, I am blessed to still be working with the family I have been with for eight years now.

A little over two years ago, I was in another program at Landmark Worldwide. I had been looking at how I could use my experience and education to share my gifts and talents with more than just one family at a time. The program I was in provided a structure, including the people that were in the program with me, to create anything I/we could imagine using tools and teams and teamwork. I made a powerful choice to start my business. I had a bunch of conversations with many people in my life who knew about business, liability insurance, legal documents, websites, logos, head shots, networking, naming my business, etc.. who believed in me, who knew others they could connect me with. And in about six months, I had all of that in order, received my LLC documents and Creating Connections was official!

Creating Connections is a Nanny Referral Service that matches Nannies with Families. I am honored to be someone who is able to provide Families with a Nanny that meets their unique set of needs while being able to trust that person with their most important people, their children. Nannies know they can count on me to match them with a family that will value them for the unique set of skills and experience that they provide. Parents are able to do the work in the world they are meant to do while Nannies are offered the opportunity to support the family and in turn, share their gifts and talents.

June 1st of this year marked the 2nd Anniversary of Creating Connections. And while due to the Stay at Home Order, it did not seem all that celebratory, I am happy to share that we are now back in action placing Nannies in homes where families are in need of support caring for their children. I am grateful to have a successful business that supports parents, children, nannies and the community!

Has it been a smooth road?
The Stay at Home Order has definitely been the biggest challenge. It was really important to me to keep Nannies and Families safe. After about three months, and no seeming end in sight, I realized Families still needed support and Nannies still needed jobs. We are taking extra precautions just like every other industry.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Creating Connections – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Creating Connections is distinct from an agency. I am one person so you get my personal attention. I only take on up to a handful of clients at a time to make sure I can offer my clients sufficient time and attention.

I have a flat fee. My fees are the same for every client. Most agencies fees are based on the Nanny’s proposed annual salary. That can give priority to families who can offer more pay. I want all families to know that they have the same time and attention given to them as the next family.

Nannies appreciate that I am advocating for them as well. They never pay me to place them with a family and know that I am looking out for their interests as well because I have experienced where they are at first hand.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the beach, the sunshine, the abundant varieties of food and fun!

Hmmm, I guess parking. I often find myself helping the person staring at a parking sign trying to figure out if they should stay or go….why must we make it so confusing for people?
