Meet JoJo V

Today we’d like to introduce you to JoJo V.

Hi JoJo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey! I’m excited about this interview. But to tell a little about me, I’m from the East Side of Chicago, and I moved to California to pursue a career in professional dancing/choreographing shortly after graduating from SIUC in 2016. I packed up my “Baby Girl” (Ford Focus) and my mom and I drove from Chicago to Northern California. I started there with a job offer at a school but nowhere to live, so I was only there for a few days, after no luck in finding a place in my budget. Thankfully, I happen to have family members in Hesperia, CA (a small city I’d never heard of, lol), so after my mom flew back home to Chicago, I drove down to Hesperia to live with them. After hustling like crazy, in 2018, I finally moved to LA! Like really in LA hahaha. It was a lot, but I was blessed to make it happen! I’ve been training/dancing pretty much all of my life and really got into choreographing in high school. I’d heard that LA was one of the good places to be for dancing, so I had my mind set to come since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, moving far away from my closest family was very hard. The whole transition of finding work and housing wasn’t easy either, especially with having no real insight on where to even begin to look. I pretty much moved out here and had to figure it all out. The struggle has been real! But I don’t regret anything I’ve experienced because it all has helped me grow.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a dancer, choreographer, and creator. Majority of the visuals I create are in the hip-hop dance style but I am a versatile dancer so I do have work in other styles such as: contemporary, jazz-funk, Chicago footwork, heels, etc… I have put together many projects of my own and have also had the pleasure of being a part of others. I am currently focused on and also most proud of the growth that I’ve seen in myself and my work since moving here. I’ve stepped out of many comfort zones to expand in my art. Aside from continuing to put together my own projects, I aspire to work with many artists (well-known and upcoming), companies, organizations, etc… and be a part of their visuals/projects as a dancer, choreographer, and/or creator. I really love the art of dance and everything it speaks and entails, hopefully the work I put out inspires others.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Wow! Ummm, favorite childhood memory? I have a lot of good memories but if I had to choose, it would be traveling to Orlando, FL with my family for our family reunion. I remember every day there just being so fun and being with my sisters, cousins, and many other family members, it was an overall great experience! I actually miss having family reunions.
