Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Byul Lee.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My life has thus far been a life long journey of trying to find out what I want to do. Los Angeles is my entrepreneurial playground. I have opened restaurants, invested into great companies, worked decades in tech, TV/film, nonprofit, and now my multiple consulting businesses. It’s been an amazing run, however I always run into the same thing. An itch to do my part to change the world. I’ve been working with nonprofits in various capacities for years which has constantly exposed me to the world’s working-class poor and the issues they face. Contrary to popular thought, for me, as a father, it cannot just be about me and my family. There has to be more and I believe the key to solving a lot of our societal issues currently lies within all of us now.
Los Angeles constantly reminds us of how difficult it is to live and ultimately survive. This is not the future I want for my family and myself, and I know a lot of people feel the same way. After studying the causes & effects of poverty, I’ve concluded that Access is a broad and major issue. Access to affordable, healthy food, access to quality education, access to affordable housing and access to financial literacy. There are obvious other major elements but the one that I never really tried to tackle was Financial literacy. Social media has created an immense opportunity for scammers to target vulnerable people.
After a couple of friends lost a lot of money to an MLM-type scheme, they were deeply distraught in how they would be able to ever afford a down payment on a home. They asked me what I do to make more money. It was there that I started to realize that most individuals do not know how to build wealth. I have been investing into businesses, real estate, the stock market, and alternative investments for years but I never thought to really teach and share my experience with others. For many, talking about their personal money and habits is either seen as a joke from being broke or a cultural taboo of sorts. I have dedicated the past year to teaching financial literacy and investing to anyone and everyone! It is one of the most important things you can learn especially if you want to build wealth over time. Workshops, groups, couples, one on ones, you name it, I will do it. A year has gone by and I have helped over 3,000 individuals from all over the world learn how to manage their money and start investing.
Getting a hold of your finances is one of the most wisest and liberating things you can do. And investing takes time, so the sooner you start, the better the results. Unfortunately, there aren’t many learning opportunities and this is why I am dedicating my time to this mission. I believe if we all had a little bit more, we’re able to give more through generosity, and that will start a chain reaction over time, long after I’m gone. Mentoring and helping individuals is what I’m called to do. When people message me, it’s my opportunity to use my passion to give to the world. Let’s crush it!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
How can you help someone value something they’ve never experienced? Convincing people that long term wealth building is important has been very challenging. There’s so much fear out there and for many, investing and personal finance can feel very vulnerable. I totally get it but eventually you’re going to have to face the fear and make it work.
On the business side of things, one of the biggest challenges for me is filtering the talkers from the doers. I get about 100 new emails/messages per week from individuals who are “interested” but most are just window hopping. Filtering and cutting through isn’t easy but I’m always motivated by the individuals who are truly seeking a change!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Investment Bootcamp/ Starting Line story. Tell us more about the business.
Most individuals work hard, and then store their money into a savings account that yields very little. There’s so much potential to begin building from investments, but that opportunity and any progress gets stagnated by putting your money to sleep in a bank account. There’s nothing wrong with banks or emergency funds but in order to actually build wealth, you need to put your money to work. You work hard for it. It’s time to make it work hard for you.
Investment Bootcamp is like a gym for your personal finances! I will help you start your first portfolio with a clear strategy. We will get into the basics of the stock market, a beginner’s portfolio, real estate investing, dividend strategy and plot out your growth road map!
Whether you join our workshop or check out our investing guide, you’re going to get knowledge and experience to level up your personal finance journey. In just over a year, I have helped over 3,000 individuals from all walks of life from all over the world. Whether you are just starting your career, or you’re well situated, there’s no better time
to start investing than right now!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, it’s not about money or how much power or influences you have but really what impact you make. What good is all this economic prosperity and wealth if you can’t use your platform to create change and help people?
The most successful individuals in my opinion are not perfect but instead strive to find how to utilize their platforms to build opportunities for others. It takes guts and savvy to really make moves. I know a lot of wealthy and influential people. There’s nothing wrong with that but I gravitate to those who choose to empower!
