Meet John Galaska of Be Calm of Ojai

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Galaska.

John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I think of myself as a living example of change regardless of age. I earned my Doctorate of Psychology in 2012 at 65. I’m currently working on a second doctorate and a certificate in Sports Psychology as well.

I have always been in love with biofeedback. My Neurofeedback, Biofeedback, and Hypnosis practice is in Ojai, CA, and I also teach in the Masters of Clinical Psychology Program at Antioch University in Santa Barbara,

I calm nervous systems with biofeedback, restoring or building my client’s equanimity by coaxing the visceral roots of emotional arousal into quiescence. My equipment is state of the art. I augment this somatic approach with Hypnosis. Stress and anxiety from life’s pressures or past experiences respond well.

I pride myself in delivering this service in the most empathic manner possible. If you are short with your loved ones, generally uptight, and regretting it later I can help.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I grew up at about 50, If you interpret that to mean I was clueless before, you are correct. I’ve come to a preliminary, beginner’s understanding of what this life is all about overcoming my own insecurities. I believe the significant times reside in relationships with those we love and everyone else.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My practice involves calming the somatic sources of emotional arousal. One might say I’m a nervous system whisperer, but that makes it sound overly mysterious. (Actually, sometimes it does work like magic!)

My equipment allows you to perceive biomarkers that are normally beneath awareness such as peripheral skin temperature, skin conductance level, heart rate smoothness, and electroencephalographic brain wave patterns.

My software presents my clients with feedback guiding their nervous systems toward a balanced state. This is a somatic approach working with the viscera to achieve a subjective calm.

But that’s not all. I add hypnosis to the mix, enlisting the unconscious aspects of the mind to soothe bodily arousal. You could say my techniques hover between the mind and body to lift your spirit. I use the reciprocal influences of the mind on the body, and the body on the mind to achieve my client’s goals.

For those with an empirical interest, my theoretical overlay comes from interpersonal neurobiology with a healthy nod toward polyvagal theory. Stephen Porges, Dan Siegel, Bessel van der Kolk, and Peter Levine are my heroes.

What were you like growing up?
I was a very needy kid. Mom never picked me up out of the crib. She thought comforting me would teach me to cry. She passed on the attachment style that she learned growing up. Wonderful lady but raised a very insecurely attached child. Two fantastic therapists and a long-suffering wife allowed me to develop a set of social expectations consonant with what is termed “earned security” in the field of well-being.

Having overcome insecure attachment I know the path to repair both experientially and, from my studies, theoretically. So what has happened now that I’ve become “fully cooked,” my own words for earned security?

My late arriving confidence allowed me to take risks, to play, to explore, to love. I lived in Europe for twelve years, became an expert skier and a top-notch equestrian in the field of dressage. I’m learning how to play the cello! I have a zest for this experience we all share and I live to help others find some joy beyond just getting by.

I am happy to see this excellent therapist featured in your magazine as I have been doing neurofeedback with Dr John almost weekly for nearly a year and I drive 7 hours round trip to do this! But he is really good and I am feeling so much better and not fighting with my boyfriend anymore and sleeping better and feeling able to calm myself when I start getting upset. He is a gem and his neurofeedback therapy is something I recommend to everyone.

Thanks Nancy! It’s my ongoing pleasure to work with you. You’ve taught me about craniosacral therapy, naturally beneficial nutrition, enjoying our natural world, yoga and more. Working with you has been a two way street!
