Meet John Fyke of Helio Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Fyke.

John, before we jump into specific questions about your business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My oldest child was struggling with learning in early on in Kindergarten. He had a hard time transitioning from classroom work to homework. Every night, he also used a night light that projected stars and moons on the ceiling when he went to bed.

The idea came to me about swapping the stars and moons being projected to creating makeshift templates to project what he was learning in the classroom on the ceiling. After a few months of a new educational bedtime routine, his teacher asked me what actions I have taken to get him to learn. “His confidence is through the roof” and “he is the first to raise his hand in class” said his teacher. I shared my concept with her and I quickly made five other prototypes of the Helio Projector for other students in the class. With much success, our little company was formed in 2017.

Recently Helio partnered up with Barbara Milne productions, to add to our product line. in addition to the night light projector, we now offer a wide array of educational products including educational songs, apps for tablets and smartphones, and coming soon, educational books.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This has not by any means been a smooth road. We have faced may issues since we are technically a “start-up”

There are a lot of people out there looking to steal ideas. Thankfully all of our products are protected through patents and trademarks.

Another major struggle has been getting our product on big box store shelves. Thankfully, the smaller retail stores took a chance with us to get us some needed exposure.

Online reviews: We have been slammed by people who do not even have children or own our products… Interesting how people want to see a children’s educational company fail… But we are not going anywhere anytime soon!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Helio Productions – what should we know?
HELIO is an educational night light projector system that emits LED light through a series of academic and entertaining discs. Use HELIO’s learning discs as an innovative approach to learning that encourages parent and child interaction. Each lesson builds on previously learned concepts through memory retention, which is proven to increase when reviewing concepts just prior to falling asleep. HELIO also provides a soothing night light before going to bed.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math–STEM for short–are four subject areas of focus that are encouraged for children to familiarize themselves with to instill interest in these fields of study. Declining numbers of college students enrolling in these subjects can be reversed if we continue to keep our youth engaged in these important subjects. HELIO is recognized as a STEM product to help children engage with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math subjects. One of the hardest hurdles was getting our STEM accrediting.

I am most proud about how many awards we have won. Some of our awards include Mom’s Choice award three years in a row. Creative child Product of the Year award in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Parents Pick award two years in a row, 2018 & 2019. Tillywig Product of the year award 2017 and 2018. Parents Choice award 2018 and Parents Product of the year 2018.

What sets us apart from others? Helio strives to not only educate children in a fun interactive environment, but it also creates a structured bedtime routine for parents and children.
