Meet John Barrett

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Barrett.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
From an early age I knew filmmaking was my passion. It all started with little skit videos my friends and I made in middle and high school. What followed as an obsession for a craft that I would eventually refine into a career path. Today, at the age of 25, I am a FAA Part 107 Certified Drone Pilot, Director of Photography, photographer, video editor, sound designer, graphic designer and much more.

After graduating from Cal State Fullerton with distinction, I worked for an IMAX film production company for about one year. There I had real world experience in the film production industry. Even though I learned a lot and enjoyed my experience, it didn’t take long until I needed to be freed from the hierarchy of working at an established company. So, in 2015 I broke off and started my own video production company in Laguna Beach, California. At “Barrett Media Co.” we produce everything from music videos to documentaries and feature films. Admittedly, those are the fun projects to work on but we also enjoy the steady workflow of the commercial filmmaking industry. Working with neighboring production studios like “Lyon Studios” in Newport Beach and “Iron Well Productions” in Santa Ana allowed me to refine my craft as a Director of Photography for commercial film production. I work with clients who range from people who just need my gear, all the way to producing full scale commercial productions. That’s probably my biggest take away from the filmmaking industry; in order to start out, you need to be able to do it all!

Please tell us about your art.
I really enjoy working with cameras. Whether it’s film photography, or 8K video – as long as my hand is on the camera, I am having a good time. Because of that, my role is often titled ‘Director of Photography.’ That title comes with a lot of responsibility in regards to camera choice, lenses, filters, frame rates, lighting and more. If you tell me about a scene, I am already thinking of where the camera, talent and lighting will go. It’s a very imaginative process. I am so inspired by things I see on a daily basis. Instagram has been a huge inspiration to me too. I love going through and seeing what other artists are working on. It always humbles me to go through pages of artists like @bejamin or @wayne_pinkston . I think it’s important to find a source of inspiration, whatever it may be, and to act upon it. The other day I was in my office, editing a commercial video and needed to step away from the computer for a few minutes. So, I grabbed my RED camera and a 70-200mm lens and just shot some cool slow-motion footage down at the beach. I think the basic message is, start with an idea or concept, and then just go shoot. Shoot every damn day.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice for other artists is this; it’s not easy, it never will be. If you want to be an independent artist of any field, you need to be prepared for the financial burden that comes with the freedom of time.

Often, I find myself hanging out with friends, at the beach or exploring nature on week days. This depresses me sometimes, because even though I have all this freedom, there are always things that I can be doing to promote myself and further my craft. So, it’s a double-edged sword trying to balance work and play as a full-time artist. Ultimately it comes down to carving out the time that you like to get things done, and just sticking to a routine. Granted, my routine usually starts around 12pm on weekdays. It may sound great to start work then, but I am often working in the office until 12am. For some reason, my best energy and creativity seem to hit after dinner time. Try to work out your own routine that fits within the hours of the day that you feel like your best self!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My Instagram is @barrett_media and I always update it with my travel photography and film production works. It’s a total mix of onset behind the scenes stuff and landscapes from far off places.

Another place to check out my work is on my website, which I built myself. Check out If you see anything on Instagram that you like, I am always creating prints for people. DM me for details! Before the end of 2018, I will be releasing a coffee table photo book. I will update the process on Instagram and my website!
