Meet Joelle Sy and Hope Duong of the Succulent Scene

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joelle Sy and Hope Duong.

Joelle and Hope, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
the Succulent Scene started as a creative gift idea and a passionate hobby! A few years back, we continuously gifted our friend’s succulent arrangements for any happy occasion. Whether it be birthdays, graduations, or housewarmings… our friends adored our plant gifts!

Soon after, we decided it’d be a great idea to share the fun of making these succulent creations with everyone. the Succulent Scene grew to allow friends, coworkers, and families to come together and let their creative ideas take root!

Since we started over a year ago, we have worked with UC Irvine, Dough & Arrow, Hammitt LA, Bardot, Universal Music Group, and so many other exciting groups.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The phrase “If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.” is a half-truth for us. Coming up with ideas and concepts for the Succulent Scene is fun and exciting. Because of this, the creative side does not feel like work.

We put most of our efforts in balancing our passion for tSS with our families, careers, and friends. Taking the time to plan our own futures and then execute our plans is the hardest part in my opinion.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about the Succulent Scene – what should we know?
the Succulent Scene is a unique activity that brings the party to you! We bring all the items needed to create your own succulent arrangement at your own specified location. This includes soil, sand, decorations, tools, and succulents!

We give step by step instructions throughout the event and provide plant care guidelines to help the succulents thrive. We are most proud of the personal aspect of these parties and the relationships we have formed along the way.

As owners and the only employees, we personally attend all of the succulent parties. We learn first hand about all of our customers, and we are there in person to see the excitement and love everyone has for our events.

What separates tSS from everyone else is our flexibility and convenience. Every party we have planned has been executed differently from the party before it. We do our best to accommodate our customers to provide them with the most memorable experience!

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
We believe you create your own luck. When we decided to launch the Succulent Scene, we spent days on end planning every detail on how we were going to develop a hobby into a full-fledged events company.

From months of research to traveling across Southern California for inspiration, we worked diligently to ensure tSS was going to be something remarkable. We are certainly still in our growth phase and are so excited for what’s to come.

*There is actually one thing we just completely lucked out on… and that is our support system. We have the best friends and family helping and promoting our little business. Shout to these guys!
