Meet Joel Edwards of Edwards Film Productions in Inland Empire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Edwards.

Joel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
“You know this is all fake right?” I was seven years old. I was watching “Mission Impossible” with my family. In that moment, for some reason, my dad felt the urge to tell me all about movies. He explained to me how they had cameras, stunts, actors. Those words that my father shared with me were more than just a lesson. His words had an impact of a lifetime. That moment – although may have seemed insignificant to everyone else around – was a moment that set everything in motion for me.

I knew I was born to be a creative. I knew that I loved films and wanted to take part however possible. From acting in short films to borrowing dads camera, learning how to edit, using my family as an audience to test my films; I enjoyed every second. Although I was an amateur filmmaker, I realized that even my films were getting reactions from my friends and family. Discovering that power to share an emotion, to make someone laugh, to bring inspiration, to spark joy inside of someone through film, was also discovering my purpose.

The path of the creative is not the easiest. There are many days of self-doubt, insecurity, self-worth. However, having a strong foundation in my faith, a supportive and encouraging wife and family has and always will be the best part of this creative journey. Films are worthless without an audience. My family will always be my first audience. They are the ones that brought value and worth to my films.

I’m honored to say I’ve been able to pursue filmmaking as a full-time career. At the moment my work mainly consists of music videos, short films, weddings, small commercial projects. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I love learning this art of filmmaking. So, I will continue pursuing and developing my craft because it is my passion and my purpose.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are many obstacles of self-worth, doubt, comparison to other creatives.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Edwards Film Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in creating cinematic captivating films. I believe I have a unique sense of storytelling by stripping down the excess and finding the raw emotion inside of each story. Whether it be through a music video, short film, commercial, or even a wedding film.

I’m honored and proud to have built good relationships with others around me. It has allowed me to meet some very powerful and influential people such as Anthony & Joe Russo, the directors of Avengers “Endgame”.

I think what really sets me apart is my willingness to learn and desire to learn. Of course I am passionate, and I do believe there is a certain level of talent and creativity that I possess. However, lots of people are talented and lots of people are passionate. I just don’t want to settle. I will do what I can to learn from those before me and listen to advice and criticism to better myself and the future of my filmmaking.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think it’s a matter of being consistent and learning who you are as a person. For me, I was lucky enough to have such a passion for film at a young age I knew what I wanted to pursue. That never changed. So, me being consistent constantly connecting with other creatives brought connections in my life that I needed. Connections to musicians to direct and shoot music videos, connections to well-known celebrities that helped my work stand out because I was introduced to successful people.

Be careful of who you surround yourself with. It’s been said that you are the sum of the five most closest people in your life. Ive been cautious to surround myself with good influences and that’s what has helped me.
