Meet Joe Uribe of Lushes Curtains in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Uribe.

Joe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well as all good ideas this came to me by accident. I was filming a commercial for a school project back in college. When I needed to use a Velvet Backdrops in one of the scenes, so I asked my mom if she can make me a large velvet curtain to use in the commercial as she made curtains for a living and I just couldn’t find any for sale online that fit my type of project. So I went to Downtown LA and purchased the fabric and she made the curtain for me. Once I finished using it in the commercial I had no more use for it so I decided to put it up for sale online as I was selling things on eBay at that time for my side hustle college money. Once I put the curtain up for sale and sold it, I noticed I sold it for 4 times what I purchased the fabric for. And that’s when the light bulb turns on. I decided make a couple more curtains and they sold as well. So just kept purchasing more fabric till I decided I was going to make a business out of it as I found it to be very profitable.

I knew back in college I was going to own my own business but just didn’t know what type of business it was going to be. I thought I was still going to be deciding on what type of business to create after college but didn’t release it was going to come to me while I was in college. Which actually was the end of my college year at age 25 when I eventually open the business.

It still shocks me to see where my business has come to be today. From a Small 8 ft. x 10 ft. wood storage shade I had in my backyard, which I made my office to 3 – 1,800 sq. ft. warehouses today. Don’t get me wrong but I did very much enjoyed the early days of my business as there was a lot less hassle to do with but from what Lushes Curtains has come to be has been a real dream come true for me. With so many more plans a head for my business, sky is the limit and I look forward to what the future brings.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well having nobody as my mentor or nobody to go to for advice on how to open or go about managing a business at the time was a real struggle for me. I actually learn a lot more by reading how to books, videos and online research about business then I ever did in college, which I actually went for a business degree. I think college gets you ready to work for somebody but doesn’t provide you with that real world knowledge you need, which is that entrepreneur experience. I didn’t get the experience till I actually dove right in and started my business back in 2011. As I gain more experience in managing my small business day by day the struggles actually become a lot easier to deal with. If anything, I’m always looking for more harder struggles to deal with as this will give me the knowledge to run a more successful business.

Not to mention new designs are always coming into style every year and season. Velvet is simply one of those fabrics that has been around for centuries and will never seem to go out of style.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory growing up has to be going to the swap meet with my mom, waking up early, smelling the coffee and eating the fresh made donuts every weekend. I worked at the swap meet ever since I was 8 years old that I can remember, till I left college.

While others my age at the time spent their time going out with their family and friends, I spent it hustling with my mom at the swap meet selling just about anything we can flip for profit. Not going to lie but I thank god my mom started me early. As it gave me that confidence and ambition to be where I am today.
