Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Holt.
Joe, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have called Downtown Los Angeles home for ten years, I have Cerebral Palsy and use a manual wheelchair to get around. My career assisting others with physical disabilities started five years ago.
I started working at Colours N Motion, a leading manufacturer of wheelchairs when I needed a new wheelchair after numerous repairs. Essentially, I worked as a freelance marketing consultant to cover the cost of a new wheelchair.
During this period, a mentor/coworker who also used a wheelchair got in another very serious car accident, so I stayed on with the company to assist. My role transitioned from a digital marketer to a jack of all trades within the company, doing everything from answering phones, working with sales staff and later measuring people for wheelchairs they would use everyday.
Learning everything on the fly over the next four years, I found four key surprises.
– The lack of knowledge surrounding products on the market to empower people with disabilities.
– The needs of the patient were often secondary to the business cohorts running the mobility industry.
– The erosion of funding sources for people with disabilities to get the products/services they need to thrive.
– There is a tremendous lack of innovation especially in North American markets, because of the three factors listed above.
I started Refresh Mobility to bring awareness within the community to give people an access point to help solve these issues.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, the road is not smooth nor straight, nor should it be.
I do think however most people have shared empathy and are at least willing to assist those with disabilities.
My biggest challenge has been clearly articulating my ideas/vision so that:
1. I can properly execute
2. I can present something that others want to be involved in
Refresh Mobility – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Refresh Mobility is a supplier of equipment and informational resources designed to empower people who use wheelchairs. Refresh Mobility is not known for much as the project is in its infancy, but we aspire to be an organization that puts the needs of the people who use our equipment first. I am most proud that every time someone spends $1 with us their life will get better and hopefully an element of their life will become easier than it was before.
In terms of what sets Refresh Mobility apart, we are working on a lot of things. Our goal is to become something of a one-stop for everyone who needs/wants to know more about everything related to using a wheelchair or having a disability. I am excited about the fundraising platform we will be launching in 2020 and the team of people working on that part of the project.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Really, for me, I just like to get up in the morning and know I am going to enjoy working on my projects. It’s nice to have impact on the community we serve and be working with a team of great individuals along the way.
