Meet JoAnne Wannarachue Lord of Mali + Lili Lifestyle Accessories

Today we’d like to introduce you to JoAnne Wannarachue Lord.

Los Angeles based, fashion industry executive, JoAnne Wannarachue Lord started her career in San Francisco, California on the wholesale side of the business representing Accessories and Jewelry lines after graduating from the University of Washington in Seattle. After a few years, JWL transitioned into the retail buying world as a Buyer, Divisional Merchandise Manager, General Merchandise Manager and VP of Merchandising for companies including Urban Outfitters, Guess by Marciano, bebe, and New York & Company.

Today, JWL comes full circle with her Mali + Lili line of handsfree fashionable and functional bags, jewelry + accessories. Designed with busy women in mind, Mali + Lili handbags are made to be worn from day to night and everywhere in between thanks to the thoughtfully designed pieces. The handsfree handbags include backpacks, belt bags, and crossbody styles featuring functional details. Whether you are in a business meeting, traveling the world, volunteering at school, or running errands around town, the Mali + Lili line of bags will be there to hold your essentials while you make your moves.

While under stay at home orders, JWL pivoted her business and designed a mask that would help women stay healthy but also look chic. The Mali + Lili Mask Scarf was introduced on social media and became an instant hit. JWL offered the Mask Scarf design to friends and family and sold almost 100 pcs over the weekend. The Mali + Lili Mask Scarf are now available on www.nordstrom.com.

Named after her two daughters, the Mali + Lili line offers trend-led accessories that strike the perfect balance between sophisticated and playful.

Mali + Lili is designed in Los Angeles and the handbags are PETA-Approved Vegan Leather

Mali + Lili is available at Nordstrom, Free People, Stitch Fix, boutiques across the US, and www.maliandlili.com.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our Holiday 2017 introduction of Mali + Lili Handbags fortunately did really well as soon as it launched at Nordstrom.com. Based on the strong performance, the Mali + Lili bags were put into 60 Nordstrom stores throughout the US as well as Free People, Bloomingdales, and Stitch Fix. This past Holiday 2019, we launched Mali + Lili Jewelry, however, due to the current situation with Covid-19, the business has not been as strong as planned. Because of this, we’ve decided to keep moving forward and react to what’s happening around us. Our newest product launch, The Mask Scarf has been an instant hit and now available on www.nordstrom.com. We are especially excited about our masks because they are a necessity but also cool and chic. We also love the fact that they are produced right here in Los Angeles.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mali + Lili Lifestyle Accessories story. Tell us more about the business.
The Mali + Lili line launched in 2017 with Handbags and has since expanded into Jewelry and most recently Face Masks + Coverings, which are made here in Los Angeles.

As a company, we strive to offer modern, elevated designs that are great quality. We want to provide fashion and trends in an accessible and authentic way.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
For me, I’d say it’s been about making my own luck through years. The hard work, focus, understanding of the market and trying my best to stay true to myself play a huge role. There’s probably been a bit of luck involved but more so it’s been about making my own luck. I haven’t always been so lucky but the ups & downs keep me motivated to do better.

I continue to strive for that perfect work-life balance and sometimes I’m closer to it than other times but having that goal keeps me going. So, I guess that I ‘m lucky in the sense that I have a personality that doesn’t want to give up… or maybe unlucky?!
