Meet Jill Velez and Leora Mauck of Copper Willow Paper Studio in El Segundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Velez and Leora Mauck.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jill and Leora. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Our story began about 12 years ago in the home garage, as many small businesses do. Leora and I met through our husbands, who are best friends from college, and decided to team up on a stationery business. We both craved a business purpose outside of our family beginnings and set up shop with our first machines in Leora’s home. Our primary goal was to create original greeting cards and printable invitations, featuring lettering and illustrations using letterpress printing, and with health and our environment in mind. Our business has since grown to be an extensive print production studio working primarily in social occasions, but our family background and environmental concerns remain the same. After moving through two locations in Culver City, we moved to El Segundo 3 years ago and really love the neighborhood. We have been able to continue working with our wedding clientele but also expand our production to print for other designer & calligraphers all over the country and several in Canada. Through the years, we have collected 4 letterpresses, 2 foil machines, over 100 house colors and a dozen house foil finishes. We bring in paper and envelopes in all shades, textures, thicknesses, and work with gorgeous silk ribbons, interesting pocket folds, patterned envelope liners, and beautiful calligraphy & illustrations.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our biggest struggle was weathering the storm of the 2008 recession. We set up shop in July of 2016, and moved into our first space out of the home in the fall of 2017. We had taken out some loans and were still starting to make connections and meet clients and retailers when customers stopped buying, stores stopped stocking, sales reps closed up shop, and we were counting pennies. We plowed through and have enjoyed many years of not counting pennies 🙂 . There’s always small challenges, like handling social media, the competition with the online market, keeping ideas and designs fresh.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Copper Willow Paper Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a pretty diverse stationery business because we both print and design. We print in digital, letterpress, and foil, and for our own clients as well as many designers & calligraphers who do not own their own print machinery. Because we have our fingers in design and the active social event market, we can offer that viewpoint to the designers who print with us and help advise their projects because we understand their perspective in the stationery world. The other half of our business is designing and producing directly for retail clients. The vast majority is wedding but we also design personal stationery, holiday cards, business cards, parties, etc. With 12 years of custom design experience, we know paper and print very, very well and have amassed an impressive list of skills and resources. It’s our diverse design talents that really set us apart in social stationery design. We work with our clients to create something unique to them that really expresses their taste and personality. Our designers do not work without one “look” and there is no set book to order from. We really enjoy producing one-of-a-kind invitations and the clients that come to us are seeking that custom treatment.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love the diversity of Los Angeles and the interest that brings to the wedding industry. We have designed invitations for a tremendous range of couples and that makes our job interesting and keeps us on our toes. It’s also great to live in a city that enjoys the luxury of custom design.
