Meet Jill Fleischmann of SUBURBAN PIE & TREATS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Fleischmann.

Jill, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After moving to the Valley in 2001, I became a SAHM. I have an art & business background, graduated from FIT in NY and worked in the fashion business. After a brief stint in the music business managing an old friend’s career, I randomly entered the KCRW pie contest.

Although I did not win, I became obsessed with making pies. Later that year, I saw a show on PBS about pie makers and I decided I could also sell pies. I opened Suburban Pie, I got a cottage permit from the county and started selling mostly in my neighborhood.

I then joined Instagram and became part of a really terrific group of pie artists. I was so inspired by some of the amazing artists like Jo Harrington aka @jojoromancer and Julie Jones aka @julie_jonesuk. So that became my niche, decorated pies!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have rheumatoid arthritis, mostly in my hands. Sometimes I am a little slow because of it, but I still love doing it!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
All of my pies are made to order from fresh ingredients — homemade taste, made with love. I do only double crusted fresh fruit pies. And I have heard that my crust is the best around. I do decorate pies, with various designs and messages. I am also known to do some great lattices. 🙂

What were you like growing up?
I grew up on Long Island. I was always into art and music, sort of a non-conformist, not so much a baker at all. I always loved to cook but didn’t start baking until I was older.
