Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesus Hernandez.
Jesus, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a kid, English nor Spanish were my first language. I only understood the dialect my parents spoke; Zapoteco, one of 16 indigenous speaking languages in Oaxaca. During my childhood, math and art were my best friends and later in middle school is when I really started to grow a passion towards art. I started by replicating images from a book about dinosaurs and my dad saw what I was doing and challenged me to whoever can replicate the image the closest. It was his way of him pushing an 8-year-old kid to improve. Art then became on and off in High School as I was introduced to many other fields but as cheesy as it sounds, I was not feeling so hyped about them. Towards the end of High school is when I dedicated myself to art. My field was more with pen and markers until I fractured my right arm-thats when I started painting. Now I have two years of experience with painting and I am still looking for ways to improve on it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been pretty rough. I had to work a lot more to help out with the household and family problems. I was told that spending my time on art was useless. Fracturing my right arm and just using my left arm to create pieces. Socializing and confident levels were low. Just being alone along the road where there was little to none support, its an empty feeling.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I paint and create. If someone needs a mural, a canvas painting, a piece of art on clothing, anything they want art on or a piece restored, I’m their guy. I am most proud for the mural at a restaurant as it was my first opportunity for a mural which led to others and has exposed me to the materials and labor needed for a job like that. What sets me apart from others is that I give my all, big or small, in creating my pieces. I don’t complain about the conditions I’m in to create my artwork.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Confidence! Without it, I was always doubting myself and preventing myself to be exposed to the world.
