Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Schultz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My photography journey started back in 2012 when I was pregnant with my son. I had always been extremely interested in photography but never really did anything about it. I had decided at that moment it was time to teach myself and there was no turning back.
I am the type of person that when I say I am going to do something and my mind is stuck on it, I will do it until it is accomplished. (bring on all the negative Nancy’s and all, I WILL STILL ACCOMPLISH IT!) The artistic side of photography came extremely easy for me, it was learning the camera and all the gadgets that took a while to get used to. Technology sometimes is not my friend.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I was going to get into wedding photography. I started shooting friends and couples for fun and then weddings started in 2015 and it all kind of just fell into my lap and I ran with it.
My husband and I are high school sweet hearts and I had told him “How cool would it be to be a husband and wife photography team?” he had then told me it was my thing and he wasn’t really interested.
A month or so later, He then had a dream one night that he was shooting with me. It was from that moment on I taught him everything I knew and we started shooting together.
It’s so incredible being able to capture and tell peoples love story along with my husband every weekend. We honestly have the best job in the world. We never thought this was our plan for us but we are so so glad that we are where we are today and wouldn’t change it for anything.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I was trying to teach myself I reached out to a lot of photographers for guidance or anything at all. I had A LOT of doors slammed in my face. No one wanted to help or give information. It was then I told myself if I ever actually make it in this industry I will never be that person. We are all in this together and should be a community lifting each other up, not tearing each other down.
I wanted to give up so many times because I had so many unanswered questions and nobody wanted to help me with those questions. I did finally fall into hands of some awesome photographers on a Facebook page called New Beginnings, they were all an open book, and answered so many of my questions. I am extremely grateful for all of them and their friendships.
I still was trying to figure out the wedding industry part. I knew if I was going to dive into wedding photography that I needed to know the ins and the outs and learn from someone who I admired their art and their work. It was then I called upon Mrs. Lauren Scotti. She mentored me and taught me so much about the wedding industry. She took me under her wing and showed me the ways. She has become a dear friend to me now and I will never forget all that she has done for me to get me where I am today. Lauren your heart is gold!
So yes, many struggles along the way but I never gave up and met some amazing people along the way. I am where I am now because of my struggles and because I never gave up and kept trying. Do not give up on your dreams. In the struggle there is such a huge learning curve to really and truly discover yourself, and the person you want to be. So my struggles made me “me” and I’m quite alright with that.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jessie Schultz Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in wedding photography and couples but also shoot lifestyle. We are known for our artistic vibe and catching those real and raw moments. We want to tell a story with our photography. Capturing those in-between moments is where it’s at for us. The real, the raw, the you!
I think what sets us apart from others is that we are a husband and wife team. We understand the couple life so I think it makes our couples that much more comfortable around us. I also always tell our couples “We are going to become best friends. I mean we are spending the most important day of your lives together!” Which we always become extremely close to our couples we are not just their photographers on their wedding day, we are their friends.
Not only is it so important for our couples to have amazing photographers but it is also so important for us to have great couples who we really connect with and vibe with. We don’t just book a wedding to book a wedding. I need to connect with you and talk with you because our relationship that we will have together is how we are able to capture all these real, raw great moments. Building a relationship with my clients is #1 for me.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really think we have had good luck or bad luck in our business. I think we have worked extremely hard to get where we are today.
