Meet Jessica Tree of The Social Type in East LA, Silverlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Tree.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My business partner Allison Brennan and I started our wholesale line of paper good products, The Social Type,
in 2010. We were already good friends and decided we wanted to do something creative together. Both eager to be our own bosses and business partners, we were excited by the idea of creating cards and products that we loved and wanted to buy. After selling to boutiques and stores all over the world the past several years, we decided it was time to expand the business and brand and venture into the world of retail. After finding the perfect location/space, that was big enough for both our wholesale line and space for our brick and mortar, we opened our flagship store in December 2017. At long last, we had a place to showcase our products as well as other lines that are near and dear to our hearts.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Learning how to balance the wholesale and new retail side of the business definitely has it’s daily obstacles and challenges! Everyday you’re figuring out something new; whether that’s how to deal with shop lifters, graffiti on the side of your building, how you’re going to find the time to prepare for upcoming trade shows while working long store hours, the list goes on… luckily we have an awesome, smart staff of ladies that help us tackle the daily struggles of running a small business.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We design and sell a wholesale line of paper good products, specializing in foil-pressed stationery and matchboxes. We are most well known for our bright designs and unique foil usage that extends throughout our entire line. We love experimenting and finding innovative ways to set us apart from the rest of the industry. For example, we recently added Patch Cards to our mix of stationery products. These cards come with a removable, reusable, adhesive patch, making it a fun gift and card in one!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very outgoing, active and loved art. I was either drawing, doing gymnastics in my front yard or racing the boys in my neighborhood.

I was really involved in school when I got to high school. I was on Student Council, Vice President of my Class and was the Captain of my Cheerleading, Soccer and Track teams.

I actually grew up living a few blocks from Allison’s husband, Sean. FUN FACTS: He was in my New Kids on the Block Club and he owns The Pie Hole here in LA!
