Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Steinman.
Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Throughout my twenties, I had a few different passions in my career including spa management, event planning and PR and marketing. While in a relationship, that had some struggles, I realized I wanted to go into a field where I could help couples like the relationship I was in. I decided to move back to my hometown of Los Angeles and begin the Master’s degree process for Marriage and Family Therapy. While in school, my main focus was to open a private practice.
As time went on with my training and I moved forward with a private practice, I realized I wanted to work in a collaborative environment on a treatment team for a treatment center. I began my full-time employment at KLEAN Treatment Center where I worked as a Primary Therapist in their residential treatment center. While working there I also build my private practice on the side. After a year and a half at KLEAN, an opportunity presented itself to become the Clinical Director for a new and blossoming Intensive Outpatient Program for substance abuse and mental health called Rise LA Recovery. I was thrilled to take on the challenge and have loved every second of my job leading the team at Rise LA.
The company has been doing well and growing so fast that we are going to be opening a residential program soon as well as growing and expanding our already existing intensive outpatient program. The need for eclectic, fun, yet informative programming in the addiction field is quite large in Los Angeles. This city has a growing problem with addiction and many people not being able to get the right and ethical kind of help they need. I hope that more programs like Rise LA can help the growing addiction issue begin to get better and slow down its growth.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have been very lucky to work with amazing organizations that have incredible leadership but even with incredible employers, in this field of addiction, there are always hurdles and challenges. There have been people that I have worked with and become close with that have died due to overdose after a relapse. There have also been clients that I have needed to counsel and work through the process of those kinds of situations. It is never easy but it has to be done with incredible patience and compassion for how everyone grieves and processes the experience.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rise LA Recovery story. Tell us more about the business.
Rise LA Recovery is the brain child and collaboration of three already existing, incredibly strong and well know recovery businesses in Los Angeles: Chateau Recovery Sober Livings, West Palms Detox and Westwind Recovery Sober Livings. The owners knew they wanted to create an eclectic, fun, ethical and stimulating treatment program that also embraces a family feel for the staff and all the clients that are cared for.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the recovery industry, unfortunately, growing very fast since the numbers of people becoming more and more addicted especially to opiates as well as chem sex issues which is when people have a meth and sex addiction combined. I hope that our country and our government will start realizing the current way that addicts are treated in this country is a travesty and hopefully, changes will be made to how easily accessible opiates are.
I am happy to see that mental health stigma is changing now that many faces in pop culture and society have been open about mental health issues and treatment. I hope that helps the mental health field grow and the stigma go away.
