Meet Jessica Kearney of The Satellite Centers in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Kearney.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am the manager of The Satellite Centers, overseeing 6 facilities in California and running our center here in Santa Monica.

Through operating centers and supporting community managers, I also helped develop management software to enable one staff person to run a 24/7 coworking center efficiently and effectively. All the while, focusing on the importance of bringing teams together through a virtual environment. I also enjoy website design and aerial videography as my professional creative outlets.

Before The Satellite, I attended University of California Santa Cruz, which later led to environmental activism and community studies in Northern California. After starting an Earth First chapter in Humboldt county and successfully saving a grove of old growth redwoods nestled in timber property, I spent time hitch-hiking across the country, backpacking through National Forests along the way.

Looking to settle down, I was drawn to the coworking model to help bring together communities and reduce greenhouse emissions by cutting commutes. My love for the environment and bringing people together give me the passion to truly believe in the importance of the coworking movement.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road for a startup is always challenging, but through developing processes and finding an amazing team, we’ve set up an infrastructure that continues to produce successful coworking spaces. Also, by creating our own software to manage centers, we’ve been able to automate processes and reduce overhead costs and give our managers time to really focus on their communities.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Satellite Centers – what should we know?
The Satellite Centers are comfortable, connected, professional shared office space and co-working centers in your community. Our first Satellite Center was built in Felton in 2010 to benefit the locals who were commuting over the hill to San Jose each day. Our community workplaces have grown since that time and continue to encourage people to work where they live. By using The Satellite and cutting out the long drive times to work you not only help the environment but improve your own quality of life and support the community you live in.

Satellite Centers offer a mix of coworking, private office rentals, workstations, meeting and touchdown space, virtual office plans, mail services, print/scan/copy facilities and video conferencing — available 24/7 to members and during the working day for non-members.  Each Satellite Center includes high-speed broadband Internet, ergonomic seating, community events, VoIP phone plans, virtual office plans, computer and admin support, and free coffee, tea, flavored water, snacks and weekly baked goods.

We keep our locations on the smaller side to create more intimate communities and also encourage well-behaved dogs to join their owners during their workday. In our Santa Monica location, we have an office dog that our members love and are a huge perk to working out of our space. If you’re having a stressful workday, petting Ender, relieves your stress instantly.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am an extremely hard worker and am always looking to improve my productivity. My eagerness to learn and adapt enables me to grow into any need position and provide the support my Community Managers need to succeed at running their centers.
